Can you think of any politician who wasn’t corrupt?

I have only heard of the positive side of JFK and I don’t remember any scandals other than his brother Teddy’s Chappaquidik (if that is how you spell it) that I read about a few months ago.

Obviously we had Mussolini and then Berlusconi, and countless less than stellar players in between.

Johnson taped everything, so did tricky Dickie. Reagan was shot, I don’t know much about that story. Cigar smoking Bill, the two Bushes and weapons of mass destruction. Obama?

In France, where do we start! Germany 🇩🇪 Willy Brandt? Vaclav Havel? Solidarity in Poland. 🇵🇱 Russia? Oh what a can of worms!

For the record, I was a large supporter of JFK, although fell 3 weeks short of being able to vote for him because you had to be 21 to vote at that time. But he had his flaws as well:

He tended to be a womanizer, as all the Kennedy boys were, following in their father's footsteps. Rumors of dalliances with Marilyn Monroe topped the list.

He continued to support the Bay of Pigs fiasco originally envisioned by President Eisenhower before him, which involved an invasion of Cuba by CIA-backed Cuban refugees. Then failed to provide the air cover they were expecting.

He also continued to support Eisenhower's meddling in Vietnam (although allegedly he intended to end it in his second term).

To appease the labor unions, he ended the Bracero partnership with Mexico that had been highly successful in providing seasonal labor help in the U.S., and our immigration policies have been dysfunctional ever since.

That's off the top of my head.

@dancingtongue That’s policy rather than corruption

@Ximenajacoba Depending upon how you are defining corruption I guess. A policy of interfering with, meddling in, invading other sovereign nations is pretty corrupt to me.

But you do the womanizing, and nepotism of appointing his brother Attorney General. There also are the allegations that he bought the election with his Daddy's money and the corrupt Chicago politicians.

The higher they get, the more skeletons they have to hide. ..and for sure they've had to tell quite a few lies. That's a given.

We make them lie to us. Nobody wants to hear the truth when the truth hurts, so if they hurt us with the truth, we won't vote for them. ..and if our guy wins, most of us won't remember the lies and most of the rest of the fans will understand.

The ones who will expect them to be true to their words are the ones who wanted the other side to win but wouldn't remember or care about any lies told by their guy.

Considering how he died while serving his fourth conservative term, then his VP finished that term and went on to serve the new limited next two terms, I'd have to say Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a good and closest to honest president we've ever had, but I'm sure he wasn't without his scandals.

Corruption has quite a specific legal meaning - the misuse of publuc office for personal gain - which gets forgotten today because people use the term so frequently to describe politicians they disagree with or find unethical. So Berlusconi and Sarkozy - definitely corrupt - but Mussolini less certainly so.

Look behind the big names to thousands of backbenchers and local.politicians who do a decent day's work unobtrusively in the background (and don't get noticed as a result). Plenty to be getting on with.

Knowing the hidden lives of those held in esteem is so educational, they’re not any different than normal people.
JFK was something, but when Jackie’s extramarital actions came to light, there was a gasp!

@Quimliqer Perhaps they had an open marriage after the birth of Junior and Caroline

@Ximenajacoba Perhaps. I do know Jackie commented it was too much fun to stop!

Why concern yourself with stuff you can do nothing about ?
Ximenajacoba · 26-30, F
@jackson55 I was after a comparative analysis

The only scandal behind JFK (other than his affair with Marilyn Monroe) was in the early 1960s where he ordered the Assassination of Fidel Castro, later known as "The Bay of Pigs" fiasco.

JFK ordered the CIA to conduct the secret mission in Cuba but in so doing, the CIA screwed it up and got caught thereby embarrassing the USA and revealing Kennedy's involvement as the ringleader. Castro then came after JFK after the word got out and the rest is history.
