@Therealsteve You don't do it directly if the state already does it for you; it's also a matter of efficiency: maybe me and you are honest, and would voluntarily distribute what we earn and don't critically need, but many (most?) would just keep it. If the redistribution happens at state level and the redistribution process is fair, you don't have to rely on the entire population willing to do their thing.

Both have their disadvantages: people can be egoist, and states can be corrupt. But it's arguably easier to make sure a state isn't corrupt, than to police every single individual.
