Pop Quiz: Can The President Order The National Guard To Deploy To D.C.

Trump claimed that back on Jan 6th, 2021, he could not deploy the National Guard to D.C., because Pelosi did not improve.

Did SCOTUS or Congress vote in extra powers for him? Because this morning, he said he's deploying the National Guard.

PS: I am being facetious. He had the legal authority to do it in 2021 and did not anyone to approve it.

SCOTUS did when they gave him immunity for actions taken for the safety of America. Basically, he can pretty much do whatever he wants and claim that he was "just doing his job".

Also, DC has never been made into its own state and therefore is under Federal laws and rules. The covenant of DC says it must take care of the homeless at all costs, but because the Federal Government has the final say of what happens in DC, they can easily remove that from the covenant.

So yes, he can.

Should he?

Have pigs ever grown wings?

@Northwest Sometimes it is hard to tell tone in text format. :)

Oh he can yet only for 30 days.

Not the situation on January 6th.

Nor the situation with these ICE raids. These ICE raids have been going on longer than six months now. And the national guard is still there. Supporting or not is irrelevant now.
He did, so he can, and quite honestly, I'm more worried about the long term consequences and the precedents set than I am about what he'll actually do in DC.

There are circumstances where he can, for example in the 60s with desegregation it was called out

@Convivial

Yes, but the segregationists were a violent group, and state and local law enforcement could not be trusted to enforce the law at that time. So it was necessary.
calicuz · 56-60, M
He doesn't have to. Violent crime is down in DC, but like a 3rd grader, he has to do the opposite. 🙄
no, it is against the law

but the law is broken
@Northwest if. your point iss "he can do that" I stipulate it is so
what other point do you have?
Northwest · M
@SatyrService That if it's permissible in 2025, then it was permissible on Jan 6th, 2021.
@Northwest and look at what DIN'T happen

Reality apparently changes with his mood and we’re supposed to be fine with it.
