Andrew Cuomo concedes New York City Democratic mayoral primary to Zohran Mamdani

I am so proud of NY and I really wish Mamdani well. I don't know if he's going to get elected but if so, this could be a turning point. I'm so happy for this person and I'm glad he's leading. We need big change.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist member of the state Assembly, started to pull ahead with more than an estimated 80% of ballots counted.

Mamdani would be the city's first Muslim and Indian American mayor if elected.

His army of young canvassers relentlessly knocked on doors throughout the city seeking support. Posters of his grinning mug were up on shop windows. You couldn't get on social media without seeing one of his well-produced videos pitching his vision - free buses, free child care, new apartments, a higher minimum wage and more, paid for by new taxes on rich people.

That youthful energy was apparent Tuesday evening, as both cautiously optimistic canvassers and ecstatic supporters lined the streets of Central Brooklyn, creating a party-like atmosphere that spread from poll sites into the surrounding neighborhoods.

This is the best way to get people to take notice of the Democrats again: Introduce policies that improve the lives of the many, while squarely targeting the billionaires who are responsible for the misery in the first place. No wonder the Democrat elites were panicking! 🤣

And I think his election is now a shoo-in. NYC is Democrat through and through, plus Mamdani has made considerable headway in more traditionally Republican districts.

It's just a pity he can't run for president one day.

@iamthe99 I was surprised the dems dislike Mamdani but I'm really hoping if he's elected, it sends a message anyways. The dems have not had a backbone for quite awhile. Their politics are there but they don't do enough and seem to have no ambition. So we need people with a spine to start doing what needs to be done.

@SatanBurger This is the big problem. When push comes to shove, the Dems are essentially the same as the old-school Republicans, but with one HUGE weakness: they HATE their progressive base whereas the Republicans LOVE theirs.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@iamthe99 That's why we have no more middle class, people don't realize that repubs are the cause of stagnant wages and corruption but Democrats continually support that.

My gut does think that this progressive would be better he's offering alternatives while dems sit there complaining about Trump and repubs drag their feet over the mere mention of ceos making a meekly 15,000 weekly instead of 20,000 or something. Oh the horror.

I should say that i fully agree with Democrats about Trump but it kinda seems like they're scared of the solution. I think everyone is and don't want to take that first step.

Good for New York. It's nice to see the establishment lose. The same people who condemned him for being a sex criminal suddenly endorsed him because they just can't let a young, popular left-wing candidate win. The Democrats still don't realize it's not the 90s anymore.
@WestonTexan i don't claim to understand this all as well as you do, but it seems like for the democrats a candidate can be way too progressive and lose votes, but for the republicans, the only way to lose votes is to not be MAGA enough

And that is why the Democrats lose presidential elections: they HATE their Base.
@JacobC2007 The Democrats as an establishment want to be as conservative as possible. Progress has always been made by their base dragging the party, kicking and screaming, further to the Left. And this is how we do it, by electing the most left-wing candidate in the primaries.

This does concern me a bit. I hope the Dems are not moving too far left dooming us in 2026.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@iamthe99 but I don't think the country is ready for democratic socialism, using that term will screw the party. We shall see in the heavily democratic NY in the fall.
iamthe99 · M
@samueltyler2 It's truly horrific that most Americans react with horror at the world "socialism" when it would barely be considered left of center anywhere else in the world. People in America always seem to vote against their best interests.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@iamthe99 totally true. They are happy to have their hand out and deny they are already accepting some socialism.

Newyorker here. This isn't the accomplishment media are making this out to be.

Cuomo couldn't get 40% of Democrats in one of the most Democratic cities in the country even though he's part of a political dynasty and a former governor - - "politically toxic" doesn't describe him. Cuomo tried for a comeback after ending his time as governor is disgrace for fraud and being a sex pest, and that doesn't make him a serious candidate.

Full credit to Mamdani for building a true grassroots movement with 50,000 volunteers and popular policies that knock on doors and talk to actual humans. Feels good to know people power still matters today. Schumer and Pelosi should be very worried. I hate Mumdani politics and policies and won't vote for him.

@iamthe99 this was fun. thanks

@iamthe99 I'm glad Mamdani is in the lead, it's still an accomplishment and we'll see if he wins or not. I'm hoping he does but you know americans.

I'm kind of still skeptical as some seem bent on being fine with high rates of homelessness, no child care, higher infant and female mortality rates and super low wages still seem to think it's the 90s. And they seem fine with ceos making 30,000 weekly instead of just like 15,000 or something.

America is the only country I've seen that willfully oppresses itself, that's how you know we've had too much privilege ironically.

But I wish for the best for Mamdani. It would be awesome if he won
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@iamthe99 Yup his policies have already been implemented in many other capitalist countries and they seem to be doing fine.

Pretty exciting for sure.
It's possible it's starting in NYC. Bye to the two parties of endless wars and environmental destruction? Maybe.
Why would you support a radical ?
@SatanBurger nah it’s a well documented fact, this guy supports terrorism

@mysteryespresso He also has come out and said he pledged to up the hate crime program in NY by 800%. He's consistently defended himself saying he doesn't dislike Jewish people and has faced death threats by people saying the only good Muslim is a dead one.

No candidate is perfect but this hinges on that you feel he's going to be horrible and I believe that's from a fear based view rather than a logical one.

I'm sorry but people are facing other issues like homelessness and wages stuck in the 90s where both democrats and Republicans don't really want to budge on. They're just denying everything while others suffer.

Someone has to do something and if Mamdani wins, I'm glad he's going to do it.

Republicans attack anyone who proposes these ideas but we need to move on, if we stay the same, we're all going to die because of other people's selfishness. Sorry but I cant save your feelings.
