Andrew Cuomo concedes New York City Democratic mayoral primary to Zohran Mamdani

I am so proud of NY and I really wish Mamdani well. I don't know if he's going to get elected but if so, this could be a turning point. I'm so happy for this person and I'm glad he's leading. We need big change.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist member of the state Assembly, started to pull ahead with more than an estimated 80% of ballots counted.

Mamdani would be the city's first Muslim and Indian American mayor if elected.

His army of young canvassers relentlessly knocked on doors throughout the city seeking support. Posters of his grinning mug were up on shop windows. You couldn't get on social media without seeing one of his well-produced videos pitching his vision - free buses, free child care, new apartments, a higher minimum wage and more, paid for by new taxes on rich people.

That youthful energy was apparent Tuesday evening, as both cautiously optimistic canvassers and ecstatic supporters lined the streets of Central Brooklyn, creating a party-like atmosphere that spread from poll sites into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Newyorker here. This isn't the accomplishment media are making this out to be.

Cuomo couldn't get 40% of Democrats in one of the most Democratic cities in the country even though he's part of a political dynasty and a former governor - - "politically toxic" doesn't describe him. Cuomo tried for a comeback after ending his time as governor is disgrace for fraud and being a sex pest, and that doesn't make him a serious candidate.

Full credit to Mamdani for building a true grassroots movement with 50,000 volunteers and popular policies that knock on doors and talk to actual humans. Feels good to know people power still matters today. Schumer and Pelosi should be very worried. I hate Mumdani politics and policies and won't vote for him.

@tenente You hate the idea of a billionaire tax, rent freezes and free public transport?

You hate the idea of a billionaire tax, rent freezes and free public transport?

Yes, correct. I do not support these 3 policies.

@tenente I'm wondering...why?

billionaire tax, rent freeze and free public transport

tax undermines incentives to invest. freezing rent discourages construction, harms affordability. free transit funded by taxpayers isn't practical or achievable.

@tenente

Firstly, billionaires don’t rely on investment returns for consumption, but for wealth accumulation and their investment behavior is less sensitive to tax changes than average earners. Also, surely if say unrealized gains or excess wealth are targeted, then a billionaire tax could reduce inequality without severely dampening overall investment.

Secondly, ok yes a rent freeze might hurt small landlords, so it needs to be targeted to the mega rich, greedy and exploitative landlords.

Thirdly, if done correctly, you can definitely introduce free bus transport in New York. It's not like it's not been done elsewhere. It will need state and city subsidies to offset revenue loss, phased rollouts perhaps in outer boroughs and/or with students/seniors to start with, improved buslanes, and data tracking to evaluate outcomes and adjust policy.

@iamthe99 I'm glad Mamdani is in the lead, it's still an accomplishment and we'll see if he wins or not. I'm hoping he does but you know americans.

I'm kind of still skeptical as some seem bent on being fine with high rates of homelessness, no child care, higher infant and female mortality rates and super low wages still seem to think it's the 90s. And they seem fine with ceos making 30,000 weekly instead of just like 15,000 or something.

America is the only country I've seen that willfully oppresses itself, that's how you know we've had too much privilege ironically.

But I wish for the best for Mamdani. It would be awesome if he won

@iamthe99 Yup his policies have already been implemented in many other capitalist countries and they seem to be doing fine.
