America has moved to a soviet-style economy

The american government administration is now dictating how much Walmart can charge for its goods.

When america was a free country the market decided prices, but now Central Planning (run by trump and bessent) will make those decisions.

That didn't take long!

Nah...
I agree with you, when you say that these people don't believe in a free market system.
JohnnySpot · 56-60, M
I waited in line all day for a loaf of bread.
These measures fall short of Soviet-style price setting, but they do reflect a populist-mercantilist shift—more command than market, and more interventionist than traditional conservative economics.

What also didn't take long: "other countries will pay those tariffs".

@NerdyPotato Yes, I don't know what was more astonishing - that trump made the claim or that some people actually beleved it

Well, that particular lie is now well and truely revealed!

how long did you live in the soviet union?? how long is the waiting line for milk\bread where you live today??
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@1490wayb The White House is telling Walmart what prices it should charge.

yes or no?

This is trump trying to wipe his fingerprints off yet another mess caused by his bluster and big-noting.

BTW, how did that 24-hour russia-Ukraine thing work out for him?
1490wayb · 56-60, M
@newjaninev2 and yet you are FREE to be critical of this government. how is this comparable to the soviet regime?????
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@1490wayb I'm not american, and my free democracy is solid, stable, and firmly anchored.

Perhaps it's only those of us outside america who can see what's happening there.

You gotta stop watching cnn

The mega corporations are in control.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@peterlee The large corporates are terrified of you, because you decide whether to buy that espresso with the $5 in your purse, or use the money to build your savings, or any of a myriad of ways you might use it.

They ease their fear by convincing you that you actually have no choices.

They win because you believe them... you believe that they're in control.

So why do they spend enormous amounts on focus groups, polls, test groups, market research, advertising agencies, consultants, sales strategies, market share, etc?
peterlee · M
@newjaninev2 the America lawyers have set it up that way.
Stop lying .. just stop

@BrandNewMan ... I agree btw, this isn't a planned economy. But then you had to say this:

Biden did the same during covid and he /Harris were supposedly going to once they figured out everyone blamed them for inflated prices and saw they did not care.

Is this some kind of alternate timeline? Of can you back this up and did I just miss it?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@BrandNewMan This is an extra tax imposed on american consumers as a deliberate policy.

Now that americans are realising that trump lied and the burden will fall on them and the tax will go to the government's coffers the trump régime is trying to paper over the lies and consequences.

Walmart, the country's largest retailer, said it could no longer hold the line and would have to raise prices on some products in the coming weeks.

On Saturday, Trump warned Walmart against it, demanding in a Truth Social post that the company "eat the tariffs."

“I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” he posted.

So-called 'tariff costs' are, of course, trumps new taxes on american consumers. To hide his blunder he's trying to personally control the (formerly) free market.
