Remember when Israel bombed USS Liberty?

Seems this pattern by IDF goes back a few decades..,

Aid workers in an urban war zone got killed by mistake?
@Bumbles If you don't believe me Reagan ended the Israeli invasion of Lebanon with a single phone call.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow His efforts seem to be working. Israel is an important US ally, and maintaining a positive relationship with them is the best way to increase humanitarian aid.

Yes -- air and torpedo boat attacks by Israel forces on the US Liberty, an NSA "spy ship" in international waters, killing 34 Americans. There seem to be lots of twist and turns in accounts of what actually happened.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@trollslayer Sanctions from one side, increased trading and aid from the likes of China, Korea, even India if I remember rightly. And yes, silence in the sense that there is so much anti-Israeli/anti-Jewish propaganda going on here in the US but very little obvious outrage at the acts of Russia. When was the last time you saw a Russian attacked on a US campus, while Jewish students currently go in fear every day.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@ChipmunkErnie if you got out of your bubble, you would see that israel largely gets a pass from the western world, and has for years. Any other country that has acted like that would have been sanctioned. As for kids going to school in fear, i’d be willing to bet there are far more incidents against muslims or black people the past 20 years. Sad all around, and definitely not unique to Jewish kids. As for russians? Not many of them here, so IDK.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@trollslayer You mean if a country, say, got attacked by a bunch of Saudis and reacted by killing a few hundred thousand Iraqis, they might get sanctioned? I do agree with your final statement -- you don't know.

The attack on the USS Liberty has been the subject of much controversy and debate, with various theories and explanations proposed regarding the motivations behind the incident and the circumstances surrounding it. While the Israeli government officially apologized for the attack and paid compensation to the victims and their families, questions and suspicions persist among some individuals and groups about the true nature of the attack.

It's essential to approach historical events like this with sensitivity, acknowledging the complexity of the geopolitical context and the diverse perspectives involved. If you have specific questions or seek further information about this incident or related matters, feel free to ask.

I know about it. I engaged in a debate about the USS Liberty attack when I was 14. A survivor who has spoken about his experience messaged me after he saw I was debating it, and we exchanged a series of emails. He supports Palestine and has been part of the freedom flotillas.

Remember when the Lusitania was sunk by a single U-Boat torpedo?

I don't.

Remember when the SS Imo collided with the SS Mont-Blanc at the harbour in Halifax?

I don't.

Remember when 300 +/- planes bombed 8 battleships at Pearl Harbour?

I definitely don't.

@Sidewinder AHH -- It's a drug to improve the memory. ;)
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
@ChipmunkErnie In the first place, I don't do drugs, I've been adamant against against drug use from the start.

And in the second place, I don't have any first-hand memory of any of the ship disasters that I have erstwhile mentioned because those were well before my time.

@Sidewinder Oh lord, another plaintive call for a Go Fund Me page to buy someone a sense of humor.
Israel has nukes. Extralegal nukes.
@Roundandroundwego In the sense that under international law it's forbidden to use nukes, all nukes are extra-legal.
@Roundandroundwego So does most of NATO.

That’s what you get for allowing females to pilot fighter jets. Lol

@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays sometimes stereotypes save lives. Lol
justanothername · 51-55, M
@AthrillatheHunt very rare that that ever happens.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@FrogManSometimesLooksBothWays I cannot accept ChatGPT as a valid source, because in my experience AI will lie to you, and all AI is biased.
PleasurePunch · 100+
Yes but who noticed? Israel OWNS the USA and

we all seem to think that's fine.
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@PleasurePunch Do they?
PleasurePunch · 100+
@IronHamster Biden is still trying to send them BOMBS (and some food too)

so Israel seems to own America
IronHamster · 56-60, M
@PleasurePunch Biden is literally funding both sides of the war.
There are just some countries where the rules and laws don't apply.
This is what people do when they have no consequences.
