I can't believe people are still debating this. Reparations is probably one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard.
FIRST of all, reparations would have to come from public tax money...garnered from people who might not be white, and who might be first generation or second generation American, so that their ancestors never lived here until VERY recently. If you take tax money away from Vietnamese or Thai Americans, or Mexican Americans, or any one of hundreds of nationalities of newbie Americans, it's like stealing from them.
My own paternal ancestors didn't arrive here till about 1870 from England. They certainly didn't participate in slavery. My great grandfather FATHERED his own workers. 12 of them.
My maternal ancestors, (some of them), were indentured to the railroad in Pennsylvania...from Scotland. So they were, themselves, (sort of), slaves.
How could anyone possibly determine which present day American citizens did or did not own slaves? How can anyone possibly determine WHICH of the present day millions of African American citizens are actually descended from African American slaves?
I have heard the facetious argument which states that...because black Americans are black, they didn't have the same advantages as white Americans. IMO, eliminate the welfare states and the projects and you will incentivize all of those who presently consider themselves to be disadvantaged, to change that.
The "Negroes need not apply" signs, that were hung outside of 1950's work sites, are not there any longer. Things have changed, dramatically. There is no longer a barrier to success.
The only thing that has NOT changed is the sense of entitlement that says we MUST pay...again. The families of American slaves were paid with 20 acres and a mule at one time...so that they could support themselves by farming. But apparently that wasn't enough. My question is...when is it going to be enough...if ever? Will the people who receive reparations today, fail to pass them on to their children? Will their children and grandchildren then demand reparations because they have not been paid?
If there are any American BLACKS (African Americans are those who are born in AFRICA) who are old enough to have been sold into slavery, they deserve reparations, but ONLY from those who are equally old enough to have sold them into slavery.
@NinaCherry One universal truth is that the world is governed by the aggressive use of force. Do you deny this? In the middle east they are so conditioned to bowing to their master that they see no value in democratic forms of government. In China we see another life or death power of government, where this cult of personality has taken such control that there seems to be nobody free to make reasonable choices. Historically it gets worse. Serfs in Europe were lower than slaves because slaves could be improved and sold, but serfs were "tied to the land."
@IronHamster All of human history (and surprisingly MOST of the animal kingdom) is governed by the aggressive use of force. That's just the reality of life and it will not change.

Slavery has been going on for thousands of years. the Israelites were on their own property their own land and we're taking over turned into slaves that's not what happened in South Africa they grabbed their own people offered them up for sale for the better of themselves

No. People who think they are owed something because of what their distant ancestors went through should move to a country where they feel more welcomed.
This is an absurd idea. Why should you be compensated for an injustice suffered by your ancestors? I have experienced much rude and thoughtless behavior from black people. They haven't paid me anything back. I don't hold this against every black person I meet. Object to anything they are doing and it only gets worse so I just make a point to avoid them.
@IronHamster Germans, Irish and Italians are EUROPEAN. They are Caucasian. As far as American blacks being mutts, you don't get any argument from modern day African nationals. I spoke to one about twenty years ago, and he said American blacks were inferior because they were stupid enough to allow themselves to be sold into slavery. Of course, while this African national was living in Nigeria, (where a lot of folks live in the mud) I'm starting to wonder if he somehow thinks those mud dwellers are as mutt-ish and stupid as Dr. Ben Carson.
@Reason10 The people of the Caucasus mountains don't look any more like any of the European races. What "race" would Egyptians be, because Egyptian society was xenophobic and an Egyptian would have been insulted if you called him "white" or "black" or Asyrian or Berber.
No, because that would give white folks an excuse to stop discussing slavery. They'd say, "We paid you back for that, so the subject is now closed." It's important to keep discussing it because white people want to shut the topic down and we're nowhere near coming to terms with slavery, as many comments on here prove.
No. Living Caucasians shouldn't have to pay for the wrongs of their distant ancestors who might or might not have been involved in slavery and such. Also, a good deal of wrongdoing to negroes was due to their fellow Africans (black or Arab) selling them out.
Reparations are damages..........as in....... if you smash someone else's car you should pay them for their loss. Someone that was not involved with hitting that person's car don't pay anyone. They weren't involved. And someone else who don't own that car......... don't get paid.
Point being...........The ones that SHOULD pay for the damage they did are slave owners......and the ones that should be paid are the slaves themselves.
If no slave owners are still alive........there is no one at fault. If no slaves are still alive...there is no one to pay. It's not rocket science.
If they have 1 to 2 generations back that were Slaves, yes. Most people would be in their 80's or 90's would qualify.
If you're taking 3to4 generations + on back, I am not sure that's prudent given all the progress (albeit slow) Civil Rights Act of 1866, was the landmark change towards equality.
By that logic, I should get repirations as well, for being 1/8 Cherokee, as well as for Irish ancestors that were brought over as "indentured servants", not many were released after their so called seven years, the local magistrates kept tacking on new bogus charges that put on another seven years, one ancestor, according to my late Great Grandmother, who was full Irish, came over as a "street urchin" at the age of nine, and was still indentured when she died at the age of 51.
