Read the first portion of the articles of secession from any of the confederate states. Most of them list slavery as the main reason in the first 1 to 3 paragraphs.

Edit: For example, here’s Georgia’s…
The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery. They have endeavored to weaken our security, to disturb our domestic peace and tranquility, and persistently refused to comply with their express constitutional obligations to us in reference to that property, and by the use of their power in the Federal Government have striven to deprive us of an equal enjoyment of the common Territories of the Republic. This hostile policy of our confederates has been pursued with every circumstance of aggravation which could arouse the passions and excite the hatred of our people, and has placed the two sections of the Union for many years past in the condition of virtual civil war.

It certainly was for Nikki Haley. In a broad sense, you had the southern states making all their money from agriculture, using slave labor. You had the northern states making the bulk of their money from industry. The north was far more prosperous, and the south struggled, even with free slave labor.

In 1851, Harriet Beecher Stowe began to publish a serialized abolitionist novel called Uncle Tom's Cabin, and public sentiment in the north rose to fever pitch against slavery in the south.

When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, the state of South Carolina declared a secession from the union, because it was believed that Lincoln was anti slavery and favored northern interests.

That was actually pretty true.

But famously, when Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe for the first time, he said, "So YOU are the little woman who started this great big war!"

Economic hardships placed on the southern states by the northern states. Everything else was an afterthought.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I don't think there was a single cause, but the Southern fear that slavery might be abolished was definitely a major factor. Lots of talk of "state's rights", but those rights seemed to revolve mostly around the right to own slaves.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@ChipmunkErnie if not for the slavery issue, there would have been no civil war. Period. Anyone that says otherwise is a history revisionist.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@trollslayer Probably true, but there were economic issues that MIGHT have caused a break between the states eventually -- but who knows?

All the democrats in the south lost their minds when Republican Abraham Lincoln decided to take their slaves away.

@Reason10 So tell me, why is the Party of Trump (formerly known as the GOP) so adamant about restricting access to the ballot box?

Why do we never see Party of Trump (formerly known as the GOP) holding voter registration drives in minority neighborhoods, spouting the greatness of the party platform and providing solutions that will improve their lives?

@meJess Anything else?

@RageAgainstTheMachine that’s the basis, the North wanted the manpower in the South to be taxed. The South disagreed and sought to suceed which the North refused to allow. Doesn’t mean I agree with either side.
RageAgainstTheMachine · 41-45, M
@meJess Manpower is an interesting word to be used in this context. Thank you, Nikki.

It all stemmed from the slave-based Southern economy, although of course that led to any number of directly related issues over government, taxes, etc.
This is AI generated, so it must be right. 🤣

Slavery

Many historians believe that slavery was the main cause of the war because it was an emotional issue that divided the North and South.

The Missouri Compromise

This 1820 compromise between the North and South marked the beginning of a long conflict over the expansion of slavery.

The Abolitionist movement

As abolitionists became louder in their demands, slave owners dug in, which increased regional tensions.

The election of Abraham Lincoln

Northerners opposed slavery for moral reasons, while Southerners supported it because they believed that abolition would destroy the region's economy.

Other causes of the Civil War include:

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

Bleeding Kansas and John Brown 1856

Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854

An argument over federal versus states' rights

A struggle for control of the federal government

Economic differences

Constitutional interpretation

Cultural differences

The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when the Confederate army opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay and forced it to surrender.

@SW-User How? Remember, unless ruled in a court of law January 6th is an insurrection. Many of them were put behind bars. .

Slavery and the inequities between the northern and southern states.
Don't ask Nikki Haley.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Violation of states rights
trollslayer · 46-50, M
I'm adding my comment of "Slavery - 100%" and then following this thread with a bowl of popcorn while I read the asinine answers from MAGA history revisionists.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Niki Hayley's crap autocue?
Renaci · 36-40
They always claim it was over states rights. Well what rights do they think the federal government was violating? The right to own slaves ffs. So slavery.
State's rights was what used to be taught for decades, then in the 90's they started pushing slavery as the cause.
Reason10 · 70-79, M
It's a difficult question for a limp wristed alleged centrist who is afraid to piss off liberals.
For most of America, the answer is simple:

The pro SLAVERY Democrats threatened to secede from the Union if Abraham Lincoln was elected president, because he was going to free the slaves and outlaw the activity. He was elected, and the Democrats started shooting in South Carolina.

Two sentences. That covers it completely.
And the Democrats have not changed today one iota. They were racists back then and they are racists today.
JSul3 · 70-79
@Reason10 Lincoln was no abolitionist. His goal was to save tbe Union at all costs.
