I don't think there was a single cause, but the Southern fear that slavery might be abolished was definitely a major factor. Lots of talk of "state's rights", but those rights seemed to revolve mostly around the right to own slaves.

@ChipmunkErnie if not for the slavery issue, there would have been no civil war. Period. Anyone that says otherwise is a history revisionist.

@trollslayer Probably true, but there were economic issues that MIGHT have caused a break between the states eventually -- but who knows?
