Should we call Trump Republicans "Anti-Reagan Republicans"?

They really could not ideologically be much further from Ronald Reagan. The funny thing is they are quick to label others as RINO, when they are the ones that distanced themselves from the party to follow someone who only recently registered as Republican in order to boost his ego.

St Ronnie Raygun began this country's decline. trump is proof of the rot and depravity of today's Republican party.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Crazywaterspring Well No. But he accellerated it with deregulation and tax cuts. Nixon actually abandoned the gold standard. So there is your boy that made everything else possible.. Having said that every administraion of both sides added something to the disaster you have now..😷
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring So funny, but not even close.
I think we should remember that Reagan was horrible too. So was Bush. They only seem good now because the GOP has become such a comically insane shitshow.
@Ynotisay When it comes to policy, Trump really is a typical Republican. The only reason he was seen as anti-establishment in 2016 is because he's really stupid.
But since then, Trump has fully rejected Democracy and radicalized the entire GOP into doing the same. Trump tried to end American Democracy, which easily makes him much worse than any other president we ever had.

@Ynotisay I cant find a word wrong with what you say. BUT. Reagan is also largely resonsiblbe for the financial ruin of the Soviet Union that led to its break up, through the Star Wars Program.. The Russinas had a well established pipeline of tech espionage that got them the latest in US military hardware and allowed them to copy, without the research cost. Reagan brought in scientists and Science Fiction authors to "imagine" the next generation of weapons. Plasma weapons, rail guns and the like and the platforms that would carry then, which bypassed all the current industry and procurement connections and threw the Russians into a panic. They had to try to "copy" these items from scratch, believing America actually had something. It was in fact more than a decade before a practical rail gun was created and its still in development.. But the funding of this effort in Russia starved the military of funds to maintain its current levels and made it impractical to "protect " the soviet bloc nations, leading to the break up..
And not a shot fired. Thats my kind of war...😷

@BohemianBoo probably right :( but reagan was probably the best republican president since Eisenhower.
Baremine · 70-79, C
People destroying the Republican party would be Mitch McConnell, Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, etc
Baremine · 70-79, C
@sunsporter1649 funny but so true. Not much difference in the swamp.

@Baremine 100 percent correct!
Or we could skip the Republican label entirely and call them other names.

Trump is destroying the Republican party, and handing the White House to the democrats. Is he a egomaniac, or a democratic plant? 🤔
@VeronicaJane He's a Russian plant. Our country is being weakened by a hostile foreign power.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
I wouldn’t hold Reagan up as a paradigm of virtue like that, but compared to Trump he’s much better.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@Bumbles what kids?
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@Bumbles WE liked both
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@nudistsueaz Ron Jr and Patty, unlike Jarrod and Ivanka.
Ynotisay · M
That works. But so does Anti-American Republicans.
Maybe we just shorten it to "The Anti's."
Because they're not FOR anything.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
What was so great about Reagan? Honest question. He made Americans feel good about themselves and their head of state? I can't think of any policy he began that made and significance to the betterment of the US. He did not cause the collapse of the USSR. It was going to collapse no matter who was the POTUS. Central planning never works. Sadly the ideas behind the USSR are now found in the US and Canada and West Europe.
They are actually not that different on some things. Both Reagan and Trump are neo liberals believing the private sector is the solution to every problem.

Also Reagan supported fascism abroad and Trump supports it more at home.
Hardly. There's political continuity between them and Reaganomics
dale74 · M
Well Ronald Reagan was a Democrat most of his life....

Call them anti-Lincoln Republicans.
MethDozer · M
Ummm not really. Trumpers are pretty much just Reaganites on steroids.

It's not like Ronald Reagan had any redewming qualities. He pretty much single handedly destroyed the American middle class for decades to come and set an abysimal precedent on union amd labor relations. The man was a total piece of shit. A xenophobic, manipulative, scapegoating, racist, fear mongering, anti-labor, enemy of the middle class and friend to the ultra-rich right wing populsit piece of shit

Ummm just like Trump
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
MethDozer · M
@nudistsueaz Reagan was awful
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
@MethDozer not at all, one of the best of the last century
