Does someone’s political views change your opinion of them?

Softandsweet2 · 31-35, F
I’m afraid it does now. There is a lot more to political views than spending bills and taxes - especially now. People get hurt by some actions. If you support them, I don't associate with you anymore.
SW-User
@Softandsweet2 very sad but true.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Absolutely. Knowing how someone feels for others or society at large says a lot on how they'll treat you eventually.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@BritishFailedAesthetic Sigh. Meta political questions should start with what you value and what you want in a society and work outwards from there.

I just reject the idea that the truth always lies in the centre as a logical fallacy. The Overton Window changes over time and is different in different countries.

Also, the modern polarisation of European and American politics is asymmetrical. There are also many in the political centre who engage rudely and refuse to compromise. Those hardcore People's Vote campaigners would be a classic British example.

@BritishFailedAesthetic There's centrist and "centrist"; virtually everyone minus the extremities of the political line have a more or less important component of centrism. The purpose of those menes isn't bashing centrism as a whole, but those who hide behind a fake pretense or centrism their sympathies for the far-right, appearing as "neutral" to an untrained eye. Be it not to lose friends, not to pass for a lunatic or even just to continue getting laid, anyone has their valid reasons. They're actually not really much centrists, hence the double quotes.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
No. People of good will exist on both sides of the political spectrum... as do jerks and idiots.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Yes because politics is about your ethics and worldview, not just your opinions on the news.

I can get on with people on all sides and I'm involved in a politica debate group but couldn't be friend or a partner with someone unless I could relate to them on their values
tallpowerhouseblonde · 31-35, F
For sure.I have to question how some are unable to understand the consequences of poor choices and why they believe that those consequences are always for others to resolve.
jeancolby · 31-35, F
@tallpowerhouseblonde Yes and me and Cindy had a run in at the gym with one lady, 26 and swimming in debt. She was hot with model looks and a body to go with it. She said she wanted to model, do porn, wrestle, anything to make money. Cindy challenged her to a fight back at our studio. To our amazement she agreed. It went bad for Cindy but I was able to get our revenge. This woman, Stella, might make the grade, but not with us.
tallpowerhouseblonde · 31-35, F
@jeancolby Cindy lost?
jeancolby · 31-35, F
@tallpowerhouseblonde Yes, very surprising, Stella knew what she was doing. We thought it was going to be a sure win for Cindy, she even invited her mom and our female doctor to watch. They don't approve of her fighting so it was a shock.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
when those political views conflict with my freedoms, principles, ethics, faith, etc., Absolutely

blind ignorance is forgivable, some people just don't know enough to know any better (they can improve/be helped); complacent/blissful ignorance is not, I have no interest in people who want to be stupid (they'll always be stupid, and never even realize it)
Yes. There are just some things you can't compromise on.

Like I had someone say they are willing to overlook the fascism stuff because apparently their takeaway of MAGA is Trump supports small businesses.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow My sister's family likes Trump because of his pro-life stance. I couldn't ignore everything about a person for one issue.
deadgerbil · 22-25
Some people have some pretty bad views and it's impossible to overlook them
Elessar · 26-30, M
@deadgerbil how can we even coexist with people who don't expose the flag or who believe lavender deodorant for men is acceptable 🫢
deadgerbil · 22-25
@Elessar I got that guy to block me again lol
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Yes it does.
I couldn't respect someone with right wing extremist viewpoints.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Not necessarily no. I expect good people to be all over the political map , they just come from a different perspective and it's not automatically a bad one or making them a bad person.

I only avoid extreme people like racists and transphobes who feel threatened by trans people, gay people, people who break from the Christian norm etc. Also extreme religious people who shove their truth in other people's throats, and extreme vegans.
Yes and I wish it was like that for everyone. I hate civility politics.
TexChik · F
In light of recent activities, I must say it does factor in.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes, particularly if they are extreme.
eli1601 · 70-79, M
Of course. It makes me question their intelligence.
HannahSky · F
It definitely can. Usually because you start to hear the views they have on serious issues and their beliefs. It can definitely change a friendship or relationship, even though you think it won't. The real shit starts to leak out these days.
JSul3 · 70-79
The breaking point is when you can no longer have a civil discussion, because that individual does not accept truth and documented facts.

That is a show stopper and ender.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@JSul3 Yes, if you can't even agree on what's reality, it is hard having a friendship with someone.
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
No I don’t let that interfere with what I think about them. We may share many other interests beyond that.

Now my beliefs have led to others changing their opinion of me. That I have no control over.
SW-User
Their views themselves, no. However being overzealous and how they present themselves, absolutely can.
For the most part no as long as it's not some sort of extremist ideology.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Depends on the views. I can get along with arguments about higher or lower taxes. But if someone's political views have them wanting to deny rights and civility to others, then we're not going to get along.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Not unless it’s extreme . Most people I know are moderate Dems or moderate reps .
SW-User
Yes and no, it gives me pause but I try to be fair.
That depends on the situation
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Yes indeed
SW-User
@MasterLee What if they claimed to have never masturbated once in their sad lying twat life.

Would you believe that person, NonMasterbatingLee ?
SW-User
Fucking right it does
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
Yes,,,some are unhinged extremists
deadgerbil · 22-25
@SkeetSkeet shhh

SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
@deadgerbil sw is my habitat
Renaci · 36-40
Yes because ones political views are a reflection of their morality.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
It can influence them, but I doubt I'd do a 180 on someone. Depends on how political they are. Some people vanish within their politics and I find that difficult.
On SW? Always and never for the better
MethDozer · M
Depends how authoritarian and extreme they are. I have close friends on the right and left of the spectrum but I can't really get cozy with people who are for exclusion and denial, exclusion, and othering.
empanadas · 31-35, M
Depends how extreme they are. Most people aren't going to agree with you 100%. However if they support the KKK, genocide and pedos I stay tf away.
