@spjennifer I hear you. I had no problem with going into Afghanistan, but I was opposed to the war in Iraq, especially the lies that we used to send our troops there. The Bush Administration even got Colin Powell to lie to the UN about it, which he never forgave them for.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@windinhishair Well, when you're a soldier, you don't refuse, you go where you're told to go. I did multiple tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan and we should have gotten out of Afghanistan when we got Bin Laden and leave them to figure it out on their own, we are not good at Nation building as we attempted to do there and in other places. Colin Powell was very well respected amongst the troops and he got a raw deal from GWB, even for a Conservative ...
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@spjennifer You are correct, when you are a soldier, you do what you are told. I rarely have issues with our military personnel (Abu Ghraib would be an exception), but I do have issues with politicians who send our troops off to war far too frequently and for the wrong reasons.

"Thoughts and prayers"??? How about action and ban the use of assault weapons.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@Peaceandnamaste Assault weapons are already banned ,didn't work
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@kodiac There was an assault weapon ban from 1994 to 2004. It worked, and shootings decreased, but Congress didn't renew the legislation in 2004 when it came up for renewal.

How very nice for you. My tenth great-grandfather came over on a ship in 1630 and was given a land grant in southern New England. Does it really matter when our ancestors got here? It doesn't make you, or I, a better person or more American. I've known first generation immigrants who were more American than you.
I am a Son of The Revolution... my family has been here since the early 1700's.

Yes, and the space lasers haven't even started yet. Or have they?
So... Another shooting has people screaming "Ban guns" again... What happens when a nut takes a car through a crowd of people??? You gonna ban cars next???
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@SW-User Just this year, in the first 100 days, there have been 14 school shootings in the US with 10 dead and 14 wounded. We have had 158 shool shootings since 2018.

@windinhishair It's desperately sad. And the amount of deflections and whataboutisms I see on threads like this is devastating. Are these people truly evil?
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@SW-User I don't think they are evil, but many people have been conditioned to believe that we cannot have ANY restrictions on gun ownership. The results scream out for action, and we have reached a crisis point where the majority of Americans believe something needs to be done. But one party will not consider legislation for further gun restrictions, so we continue to spin out of control.

@specman You may find it acceptable that the single largest cause of death of children and teens in the US is gun violence, but I don't. There is no question the US has the worst gun violence of any nation. The data back that up.
@windinhishair so my original statement still stands the 2nd amendment did not or will not kill anyone and what did murder those people is some one with mental issues. That is what my comment was about.
As far as your last comment goes i would like to see the data. I seem to remember it being something else. to be honest we shouldn't limit this to children and teens we should include all that died from gun violence.
We are not the worst country on gun violence. Their has been thousands killed in their attacked country alone.

@FoothillsPatriot well guess what, plenty of OTHER people do have a problem with that
Gun nuts who believe it infringes upon their second amendment right
They would rather there be absolutely no background checks or registrations, as if that is what this country really needs: the ability for anyone to get a gun no matter what their mental situation is.
How hard is THAT for you to understand? Effin moron 😂 fvck off already 💀

@FoothillsPatriot Not true, but you go on believing. A sale to a right-wingnut who gives his name as Mick Emouse at a local gun show is not going to be easily tracked.
kodiac · 22-25, M
So none of this would have happened without the second amendment?
kodiac · 22-25, M
@windinhishair Releasing criminals with no bail is a good example.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@kodiac That shouldn't happen with violent crimes. I don't think it is very common.
NerdyPotato · M
@kodiac just in anticipation of what any GOP supporter would probably say. After all, that's been the main focus of the GOP lately and one recent shooting was committed by a trans guy. Knowing him, he'd point to that as the problem and affirm the GOP is in fact pushing down on it really hard. (Which they are, just for no reason whatsoever.)
Anyway, what society problem that's unique to the USA would be the cause and when is the GOP going to propose a solution for that?

This is heartbreaking but guns are more important than humans.
Politicians want to get rid of books instead of guns. Last time I checked a book never killed anyone.

@iamonfire696 Kind of a sad reality.
People talk about how without the 2ns amendment, the rest would not be possible. Only thing is, the rest of them are not nearly as guarded as the 2nd.
The very fact that so many books are banned shows just how important the first one is.
If they want students to read, why NOT give them something they can relate to? Something written on this side of the 21st century instead of bullsh*t like The Great Cuntsby or other "classics" that NO ONE, let alone young readers, give a squirt of p*ss about.
About books killing people - Certain ones though may cause students to die a slow death of boredom.
JESUS CHRIST I just looked up a list of books that ARE required and The Great Cuntsby is first on the list!"
My hope for present and future kids - give the little sh*ts something more modern and interesting to read!

@FoothillsPatriot The problem with having them in place is that too many unqualified, unstable people have guns.
But then if we didn't have 2nd amendment, there wouldn't be anything stopping the US Govt from pretty much taking over everything.
People say "Other countries do not have such problems." But then the USA is not a civil nation.

@windinhishair Again with the baseless racism charge. I defy you to find actual racism in anything I’ve written. Quoting actual FBI crime stats isn’t racist.
Red states own more guns do gun homicide rates would reasonably be higher. But dead is dead whether. Here’s a challenge. Compare the gun homicide rates among cities. Take the fifty cities with the highest raw numbers of gun homicides and compare the ones run by democrats with the ones run by republicans.
What? You mean they’re almost all run by democrats?
Does that tell you anything?

windinhishair · 61-69, M
@redredred There you go. Red states have more guns, and hence, more gun deaths. Very good! So you have a better chance of dying in a red state with high gun ownership than a blue one with lower gun ownership. That's why states like California, New York, and Illinois have lower gun death rates than states like Mississippi, Alabama, and Wyoming.

However, the surprising thing, the thing the right wing always forgets to mention, is that the majority of ten lowest per capita homicide cities also have democratic mayors.
That's right, when you look at both ends of the spectrum you find that most cities have democratic mayors. The correlation between mayoral party and homicide rate is weak.
However, when you look at state governor's party vs per capita homicides, the correlation is strong. And when you stop and think about it, state gov't has a lot more power over gun laws than city gov't. Can Tampa's or Orlando's democratic mayors override DeSantis' new carry w/out permit rules? I don't think so.

I looked into that city - mayor - party correlation a while back. Yep, the majority of ten highest per capita homicide cities did indeed have democratic mayors. However, the surprising thing, the thing the right wing always forgets to mention, is that the majority of ten lowest per capita homicide cities also have democratic mayors.
