Florida, Where All Socio-Economic Problems Have Been Solved

Looks like Ron DeSantis, and the Florida legislature, are done resolving all of the sunshine state's problems. Dedicated as they are, they did not stop for a victory lap, and instead they're plowing ahead with a plan to who Mickey who the boss is.

A plan was announced Friday to introduce a bill into the Florida Legislature that would replace Walt Disney World's special self-governing power with a state-run board.

The notice was posted on the website of Osceola County, which houses part of Disney World along with Orange County. Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing the effort, according to sources in his office, and the intended legislation will mandate that members of the board will be appointed by the governor, according to sources in the governor's office.

"The corporate kingdom has come to an end," DeSantis' communications director, Taryn Fenske, told Fox News. "Under the proposed legislation, Disney will no longer control its own government, will live under the same laws as everyone else, will be responsible for their outstanding debts, and will pay their fair share of taxes."

The $18.2 billion in annual economic activity generated locally by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts accounts for 2.5 percent of the gross domestic product for the entire state. Of the 7.2 million Floridians in the workforce in 2009, more than one out of every 50 had a job that can be directly or indirectly tied to the operations of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. This is who DeSantis wants to go to war with. And the only way to declare victory is to take over part of the state, as fascist move as there's been in 50 years.

WDW is no savior - for as much as they give, they've created a tourist ghetto in which kids live in the same motels running "drug-free" transition programs. Each morning, school busses line the bus stops and motels along the tourist corridor. They charge $25 a vehicle to park in its lots but the people who work standing there directing traffic will make $11.44 and hour. It's a paradise.

DeSantis is only the latest arrogant, unskilled sea captain shouting into the storm. Florida is busy destroying itself through corporate greed and development faster than any villain can do; it'll be fun to watch his white boots slide into the maelstrom that's already begun to form.

@Graylight sadly, you are preaching mostly to the choir!

Interesting. Corporations paying their share of taxes, huh? Wow. That sounds very Socialist. But there's something telling me that it will be exclusive to Disney. Because of their attention on inclusiveness. Can't have that.

The largest beneficiary of all tax breaks in Florida is what?? Not actually Disney, but, how about religious congregations, and even their buildings! I bet he won't go after them!

Sounds Marxist.

I am waiting to hear when Disney World will moving to another state near by. I almost dead certain Georgia would more than willing to have such a major economic boost and let Florida become again like Georgia.. 😈

@DeWayfarer Yeah, there's a reason Disneyland doesn't close: It's in the most temperate, weather friendly zone of the US and you can't predict earthquakes fast enough to plan to close parks.

Central Florida exists because of WDW. Remove them and you'll see an economic collapse that'll make Haiti look like Hilton Head. but hey, you know better than a 20+ year citizen of the state. You're in the internet.

@Graylight no. I know better because I was right next to Disneyland when a earthquake did happen in the 1970s. I lived a mile away from Disneyland.

Disney Inc really doesn't care! That's the whole point of my reply!

Disneyland should have been shut down! The darn rides had sustained damage.

Think! The Matterhorn!

The darn freeway bridge had collapsed not more than 15 miles away.

BTW before Disney world, Disneyland could have shutdown easily without affecting anything. In fact it almost happened a few times. Why Disney world started up in fact. Disney claiming that it was too hard to conduct business in California is why.

Disney world needs to be shut down actually. They are a monopoly! A monopoly that never would, nor could ever happen in California.

That is beside the point though. Disney Inc doesn't give a darn anyway about Florida. Just like Disney Inc never cared about California.

They will do as they darn please. Even if it ruins an economy. That's how monopolies operate. And why they should never be allowed to become a monopoly.

They can and will do whatever they want to do. DeSantis is far too late to put the brakes on Disney Inc. They are now a worldwide monster of a monopoly.

This is just the parks, resorts and stuff!
Not going into movies or whole TV networks or such.

Six world-class vacation destinations with 12 theme parks and 51 resorts are at the heart of WDPR, operating in North America, Europe and Asia. WDPR also includes Disney Cruise Line, with four ships and plans for two more to be completed in 2021 and 2023; Disney Vacation Club, with more than 220,000 member families; Adventures by Disney, which provides guided family vacation experiences to destinations around the globe; Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, in Ko Olina, Hawaii; and Walt Disney Imagineering, which designs and creates Disney parks, resorts, cruise ships, attractions and entertainment.

DeSantis wants to stop all the above! Well DeSantis is decades too late to stop any of it. Simply too late to put the brakes on the monster. The kraken is loose and will go wherever it pleases itself now.

The hurricanes is just a contributing factor for them moving. It does cost them dearly. Yet the picture is far worse than any hurricane could do.

Disney is a world problem now, not a state problem. Just like Google is a world problem. No single country can really affect them. Must less a single laughable state as Florida whose politicians are already bought and sold.

Disney simply will move. Economy be damned. Just like they didn't care about California or the people that rode the Matterhorn after the earthquake!

They simply don't care! All that matters is profits! No profit, then move!!!

In public they are all about being nice and friendly, yet in the boardrooms they are like this famous chief...

Thanks to @Gusman for the above video! It's a perfect example of what Disney is like in a boardroom meeting. This guy restaurants are expanding like Disney Inc after the 1970s, long after Walt Disney died. Yet it's the same exact attitude of Disney Inc..

Happy to exploit their customers no matter what. Even if it should cause death. Same with Disney world and Florida's economy.

Cut off their profits? They absolutely must leave! That's what DeSantis wants though. For Disney to have less control means far less profits. Better off for them to ruin Florida's economy as an example!

"Members of the board will be appointed by the governor"
Will they be 'no show jobs' with salaries and benefits determined by the "Governor"?

will be responsible for their outstanding debts

Sorry, no. When you invade and annex, you own it. The taxpayers in Osceola county are going to LOVE this.
