Am I a bad leftist just bc I like big business

I mean sure they're all run by ghouls, but the employment they offer is much more stable than it is with small businesses, and they're a lot easier to regulate. They're often better from a customer experience perspective too, since their large size allows them to offer a wider variety of goods and services. That said, small businesses tend to be better for boutique stores and restaurants, since they offer a wider variety of experiences and feel more authentic.

Enterprise isn't necessarily a bad thing. Lots of choices are available to the consumer. But when referring to employment options, remember large companies have a goal to be as profitable as possible. Paying employees is a liability. They will eliminate your job tomorrow and replace you with software once they figure out a way to do it.

@Celebration Small companies also are profit-maximizing and will fire you if it helps them. I agree that that's a flaw of business in general, if that's what you're saying.
@BlueVeins your role at a big company will tend to be very specific, whereas at a small, local company you're more likely to wear as many hats as it takes to get the job done. Smaller companies may not have resources for workforce development and software. Smaller companies, particularly mom-and-pop joints tend to see the value in their people. So while on the surface, opportunities abound at big companies, be careful of constant re-orgs and layoff rumors.

I work for a small independent company and it's the best job I've ever had.

I would argue that they are not easier to regulate

Why? Because they have the money to influence politics directly in their favor.

Also once they beat out their competitors they no longer have to offer quality on the level they use to.

If their ability to do all this could be nullified? Sure.

But i dont see that happening.

Also big businesses lead to concentrated wealth which is itself a huge issue.

If it's big soulless corporations you support such as Apple and Google, your Walmarts, etc, then yeah I'd say so. I have taken political compass tests and some have said I am a centrist and others said I'm left libertarian. I don't like big corrupt corporations and that's a pretty lefty position.

Depends on what you consider big business. Personally I believe multinational corporations are like countries unto themselves.

They know no allegiance to any country, therefore should be abolished.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@DeWayfarer The fact that multinationals are less beholden to any one state is one of the few things I like about 'em. The nation-state is a dumb idea anyway.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@BlueVeins until you get into situations like with China.

I don't believe a country should own a corporation yet that's exactly what the situation in China is.

Yet when it comes to foreign policy multinational corporations are in conflict with the policies of their originating country. Such is the current situation with gas companies.

The problem though goes back to WWII with Ford producing war vehicles for Germany.

Workers of the world owe no allegiance to the bourgeoisie, whether petty or the upper class.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Eh we all gotta swim in the water. Small businesses are often tyrants that treat workers horribly. I'm of the "no ethical consumption under capitalism" mindset.
Neoerectus · M
Except the anti- trust folks seldom regulate. Last important breakup was ATT decades ago.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Maybe yes.

😂
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Burnley123 But if you think about it, a socialist state is like, the biggest business of alllllllllll
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@BlueVeins I'm in favour of a strong democratic state and an economy run by cooperative businesses. Sure, they can be big cooperatives,

Economies of scale can be beneficial if that is your point.

The worse thing about big businesses is the political impact. I'm not just talking about corporate lobbying (though there is that) its in a general sense that they allow a ruling class to exist. The libertarian idyll of a small business society (with no govt regulation) is clearly bollocks.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
No, of course not.

I kinda disagree. Large corporations are harder to regulate due to their sheer size and influence. Also i say meh to their job creation vs. Small business. Yes they create more jobs but at the expense of many of them either being redundent and high paid, or just low pay fodder. It's worth mentioning small buisiness leaves more room for more buisinesses and competition allowing for the favorable outcome of more buisiness ownership. Add to the fact that small buisiness owners also tend to be part of the actual labor force of said buisiness. Another pro for them is they allow for more individual buisinesses in a market that makes them more tailored for each region and segment of the shared market.

The best case scenario in any economic model is having more business owners than employees. The more people who own a business the better.

Maaaan, multinationals are the worst offenders.
