How ironic that the Republicans are waiting on the Red districts of California to reclaim the House

The same people who keep hurling pejoratives at California as if it is 100% leftist, liberal, tree-hugging, fruits and nuts, are counting on the Red districts of California to give them a slim majority in the House, at which point Congressman McCarthy from California is odds on favorite to take the Speakership from California Congresswoman Pelosi. We don't just embrace diversity in our rhetoric; we live it.

@sunsporter1649 As do photos, cartoons, and other anecdotal material with neither context nor nuance.

@dancingtongue And that from a demonocrat. Amusing
Unfortunately, California uses a nonpartisan commission to draw district boundaries. Otherwise the Democrats could have gerrymandered the hell out of the state.
@checkoutanytime At the time, there were 2.5 million people in the entire US. The idea that one state could have 40 million people was inconceivable to the founders.

However, I'm aware of the historical reasons for why states have equal representation in the Senate. My problem is with how the House is gerrymandered to give the Republicans an unfair advantage by packing Democrats into fewer districts. All district boundaries should be drawn by a nonpartisan commission; the way we do it now violates Article IV, Section 4. Also, each House district should have an equal number of people. If that means the House has 2000 members, so be it. The only other way would be to have one representative for multiple states to maintain equal populations with the current number of House members.
@dancingtongue Governor Schwarzenegger was responsible for the nonpartisan commission. But if California does it that way, so should every other state.

@LeopoldBloomFormer Governor Schwarzenegger through his foundation at USC was the major force in getting the nonpartisan commission on the ballot and passed -- but it still required a direct vote of the people by ballot proposition rather than expecting politicians in either political party to do it legislatively.
Do they still have general stores, where you can buy whiskey, guns, and a made to order sandwich ? I was under the impression state legislators outlawed General Stores.

California's still a hellhole.

@dancingtongue So you're used to the homeless crapping in public. I've heard from people that lived there and got out. And I see on the news what a hellhole it is.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@ron122 I know enough about the problem to know it is not isolated to California and is a product of multiple factors, including inadequate mental health services, poor VA service/benefits, and income disparity. We may have more of it than most because of our high cost of living, inadequate amounts of affordable housing, and milder climate that draws in people from other states. But that has been going on since the Dust Bowl days of the Great Depression when so many Okies and Arkies descended on us. At least we work on solving our problems rather than conspiracy theories.
@dancingtongue Ive been stationed outside of SF for a lot of years and have seen it get worse and worse. It was bad enough when Jerry Brown was governor the first time, it was almost as bad the second Newsom is almost as bad, still bad though.

SF went from beautiful to a "shit hole" rather quickly that last few years, and the only thing California has done is raise their taxes even higher. Broke my heart that a once beautiful state is turning into a third world country.

Keep voting the same lunatics in though, get the same result.
