House of Cards was based on a British show...

... and not without reason. UK politicians love plotting, manipulating and manoeuvring. After Jeremy Hunt's anti-Truss budget (he was virtually smirking as he removed her entire policy agenda whilst standing next to her) Suela Braverman has now resigned as a minister. The objective here is to create as much chaos as possible to undermine Liz Truss's failing premiership. A storm of negative headlines and an unworkable government would mean that Truss faces a move against her by Conservative MPs and/or is forced to resign.

The person most likely to benefit is Rishi Sunak, Truss's rival for the top job. The man is keeping strangely quiet and out of the headlines.

Now I am not saying that Sunak and other Truss rivals have met in smoke-filled rooms to orchestrate a planned sabotage of Truss. I am not saying that he (or someone similar) has hatched a deal with Hunt and Braverman to get rid of Truss. I am not saying that they will definitely get top jobs in the next Conservative government. If they do, it will be sheer coincidence.

Or not...

{@burnley123] spitting image rather reminded me of how the thatcher cabinet was run by her i would not of been surprised with some of the tory ministers of thatcher governments that was the case . but they found they did have a backbone put the knife in her back in 1990. even geoffrey how put the knife in a loyal thatcherite .it shows as you say in politics treachery is always in the background et tu truss

@smiler2012 In recent years, the regicide is getting ridiculous though. Cameron straight-up resigned.

May, Johnson and now (almost certainly) Truss have all been removed by plotting.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 May was removed because she was incompetent. Johnson, though plotted against, because he was a liar.
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Burnley123 as i said the treachery party

Yes, Sunak is very quiet at the moment. Braverman, possibly the least attractive of the lot, has now gone...I went to do some shopping just now and I'm wondering if I've missed any more resignations.

I wonder what Hunt's game is? On the face of it, propping Truss up isn't going to do his reputation much good, but then, if she 'dies the death', he may well be in a position to take advantage. Personally I think they're stuffed. How badly remains to be seen.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@supersnipe To me, its pretty obvious that Hunt has a deal with Sunak.

Sunak as PM and Hunt as Chancellor would not be a surprising outcome of this parade, put it that way.

And now the Chief Whip's gone . . they've even managed to make a mess of your good analogy 😭

I loved the British original and the novel. It looks dated, but it's got a certain cruel humour that I find timeless. Kevin Spacey was fantastic in the remake but sadly the conclusion did not survive his demise.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SunshineGirl It didn't. I tried re-watching the UK version recently and it is dated. Fantastic premise.

The US show was fantastic for the first two seasons, average for a third and then fell apart at the end with a Spacey-shaped hole in the middle.

I’ve watched both the American and British version, and overall I do prefer the American version. But that’s primarily because of the iconic main character. Both are high quality shows though, so the differences in pacing and tone
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Axelerator The British one was good at the time but it's really not aged well. Kevin Spacey was an incredible actor before he got exposed as a sleaze. The final series badly missed him. It was like the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 “Kevin Spacey was an incredible actor before he got exposed as a sleaze.” Come off it. If he was an incredible actor, he still is. If he’s a sleaze, he’s a sleaze. Completely separate things.

She might last longer than Brian Clough at Leeds (44 days), but I wouldn't bet kn her lasting longer than Sam Allardyce as England msnager (67 days).
Hey, that sheer coincidence occurred! 😉🤣
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SomeMichGuy It did lol.

Strange that Hunt and Braverman brought down Truss and then get the jobs from Sunak. It's as though they all had a prior conversation about it or something! 😂
@Burnley123 I'm sure people whonsay such things are reading far too much into entirelt random, uncorrelated actions by independent beings who could *not* have been acting in collusion to pull the hand brake on the train as it jumped the tracks and was hurtling towards Disaster after being renamed the Crazy Express.

I mean, to think that some rational people might wonder how it is that a fresh PM of HM Government would in just weeks create chaos for the UK's economy & society by trying to overhaul and invert the entire basis of how the UK works--esp. in the continuing aftermath of TDKAB (The Debacle Known as 'Brexit')--and, being concerned, confused, alarmed at how the country seemed to be foundering under obviously utterly incompetent "leadership"...to think that such persons would act in concert to both stop the diastrous clown show which made no friends of Britain laugh, and to create leadership under...ANYone else...and reassert & reaffirm the previous course of Britain's basic fiscal & social policies...to provide reassurance to markets which were rapidly sending Sterling into old ruble territory...

Well, ANYone who would make such WILDLY speculative claims simply sounds crazy, sir! Are you Ms. Truss?! 😉🤣

FYI people, the British version of HoC is not as good. It was good in the early 90s when it first came out but I tried watching it recently and its really dated. The American show took the best bits and did a good job.
Seems like 9 out of every 10 shows out of the US in the last 10 years are retreads of British TV shows.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Its really not. We get a lot of US TV and a lot of it is really great tbh.

There are a few famous Americanised shows though, the Office being the most famous.
@Burnley123 Might also just be that I noticed a few more than usual like Skins, and Shameless also got redone for American audiences. Apparently Veep is a reworking of In The Thick of It.
Northwest · M
House of Cards, Shameless. A ton of US shows based on British series. How long do you think Truss will last?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest A few days. She could survive this but it's not likely. The vultures have landed on the rock next to her.

@Burnley123 As I read this, I saw a newsflash that Braverman resigned. Tick tock.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Update: Braverman was apparently to Truss ally who has been forced out by Hunt.

It's not exactly what I said but the coup is well and truly in. Lol.
Man, that's quite a chain of "not saying"...just sayin'... 😉

Half of US shows are clones of UK shows ... it's embarrassing 🤣
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@SW-User Our actual politics is a bad clone of the show. That is more embarrassing.
