its simple, his followers are "conservatives". what does that mean ? that they don't like change. they cannot evolve, whatever they thought yesterday is what they will think tomorow. that's why most of his followers are "believers", at some point as kids they were told that the bible is the truth and they just went with that and never questionned it. the same can be said about their attitude towards racism, women rights, the environment, issues where most people have evolved in the last 50 years, they stayed the same.
