End the war on Drugs

There is a solution to the “World Drug Problem”. Open drug policy key concepts:

• Abolition of legal repercussions for consumption or possession of any substance

• A reasonable regulation of production, distribution and exchange of any substance, that is aimed at preventing consumption by non-autonomous persons

• Taking measures to rehabilitate people who faced criminal penalization in connection to non-violent drug-related offences

• Advocating for compassionate and tolerant attitude towards people who use psychoactive substances

• Encouraging science-based discussions and narratives to educate potential drug users of benefits, consequences and dangers of drug use.

"There is no war on drugs because you cannot have war against inanimate objects. There is only war on drug addicts"
- Dr. Gabor Matè

I dont understand how people can be against this when it has been proven to be effective. Countries have done this and met with success. It isnt a theory anymore; it's fact!

Portugal, netherlands, switzerland, the list goes on...

It's about societal stigma. Every other known medical condition is treated with understanding and empathy. Not addiction; that's a moral failing, and indication of low character. It's easy to marginalize those who use drugs when that's your view.

This is complicated by the natural human tendency to apply more pressure when a little doesn't work. We do it with our children, our pets, our citizens. Break a rule? Here's a bigger rule. Broke that? Here are 3 more. Until you hit a spiral no one can escape.

The war on drugs is a farce bordering on a lie. Because here's the truth: People who use drugs will always use drugs and people who don't are no more likely to just because it's out there. An addict will get his fix, one way or the other. Threaten them and you'll find out how serious addiction can be.

@Graylight this.

We use to rip criminals apart with horses. Lo and behold people still broke the law.

If that wont dissuade crime, nothing will.

Better to manage it than try to prevent it (you can't).

@Eternity Especially when It comes to drug use and other non violent crimes. We can't prevent it and locking them up won't solve anything it rather pushes some people further down a spiral.

Cops, courts and campaign contributors make too much money from drug laws. That's why change is impossible.

The CIA was tasked to supply drugs to keep the drug war going. Otherwise it would of ended long ago.
We're not used to doing whatever works best for our health and safety. We're used to excessive use of force.

I dunno what to say really
But drug prohibition seems so stupid to me
Budwick · 70-79, M
ORrrrr, you could not use drugs!

ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Budwick i don't use any but also agree with what she says
Budwick · 70-79, M
@ViciDraco OK, I don't.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes I agree. Treat drugs and addiction as a health issue instead of a criminal issue. It is obvious that waging war on drugs with more police and laws has not worked.

I believe in pragmatic harm reduction.
Allelse · 36-40, M
Exactly but good luck trying to convince people of that, they want storm troopers marching down the street and white picket fences, rot them.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I've long thought it would be cheaper and produce a healthier society for drugs to be legalized, regulated, and taxed. Use the tax income to fund education and free rehab services for people who want to get off them.

Probably save a ton of money we currently spend in enforcement.

Because it's legal, the profit motive for building criminal enterprise around it evaporates. Thus eliminating trafficking and trafficking related violence.

It won't all be golden, but it only has to be better than now to be worth doing.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@ViciDraco Not to mention the positive effects legalizing drugs have included less burden on ER's, lower cost of healthcare, fewer overdoses, less communicable disease, lowered crime rates, and lessened homelessness. But who wants good stuff for society?

You've never worked in a prison.

Rehabilitation? He cut her head off.
SW-User
@JimBeam you understood my questions? I am questioning whether prisons encourage violent behaviour instead of trying to archieve the opposite.
My original post refers to drug use only not violent behaviour on drugs. That should be punished.

While in prison, he never cut anyone's head off. He did not want to get out of prison. He had no choice. And now his girlfriend doesn't have a head. Many prisoners love prison. It's their home.

Now the state gives prisoners synthetic heroin. Many guys tell me it's worse than the real thing.
