People who were inside the meeting with the joint chiefs and President Biden are leaking the story.
It was President Biden who pulled a number out of his rear end, [big]600[/big] troops, to be left in Afghanistan at Bagram AFB.
He insisted that no more than 600 troops could be left at Bagram and ORDERED his generals to withdraw all but 600.
The generals advised Biden that they could NOT maintain Bagram with only 600 troops, but Biden insisted.
Then, because the generals could not maintain or defend Bagram in the face of those orders, they withdrew ALL of their troops overnight.
