If you really want to experience social distancing, lend somebody money!!!

This depends almost entirely on where you are. If you're on federal property, no, they should not be optional. If you're in a privately owned business, then technically that's up to the business owner to decide. I would very heavily encourage them to require mask-wearing though. If you're, like, driving in your car or at your house well then yeah it's a little silly to be wearing a mask.

To be honest with you, I've been wearing masks in some public spaces for many years before the coronavirus. Particularly in subway tunnels. I've read a lot about how dirty the air is in the subway tunnel and it grosses me out, so I usually wear a scarf or bandana around my mouth and nose while waiting for the train.

The reason for wearing it in the car is that you don't want to handle if with dirty hands or hang it / make it touch surfaces after you've been in a place where it was mandatory/necessary. At least for me personally, I don't touch it until I'm at home, so that excludes removing it while I'm driving.

@Elessar I sometimes will wear a face covering in my car if it's really cold. It's fuckin' 4 degrees Fahrenheit right now so it is kinda nice to have something to keep my face warm, so long as it doesn't obstruct my vision.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@BlueMetalChick Yeah, they provide some nice additional warmth in winter, the problem will be Summer here.

It’s a personal garment. It’s no different than wearing a hijab ? Likely the original purpose of wearing a hijab covering was health purposes wear it or die.... it becomes a religion. Punishing people for NOT wearing something g is no different than a religion that believe if you don’t wear something you are doing wrong. .

Btw, I wear a mask, and with increased pollution, it probably serves a dual purpose. But it’s my choice (cause I happen to want to be cautious) I wore it when they said it didn’t help. (Stupid claim, doctors and nurses wear them in surgery regardless of who benefits)

🤔 very serious. Thanks for sharing. Have you studied yourself and your motivations btw, btwI’m getting sleepy again— it’s NOT you @BlueMetalChick

@Mindful Fortunately it's not that hard to decipher with me. I grew up incredibly poor in an extremely violent part of the world so my childhood consisted of destitution, food insecurity, chronic sunburn, and watching soldiers butcher each other all day. The experience left me with a feeling as if the world was trying to kill me and my only option was to be violent in return.

But I've got a better grip on it than I used to. And I'm always self improving.

@BlueMetalChick outcome impressive.
Evolution is very logical. You’re a success story. I hope if an when given the opportunity, you share your success in overcoming trauma. For the benefit of others. I have my silly little demons to deal with. they seem huge.yet are Nothing compared to yours. My stomach sinks to hear about your earlier circumstances. To think that was common for all civilization thousands of years ago. we have come far...as you said by laws. Sigh.

Since they're meant to protect the community as a whole more than the individual wearer, no.
No. You don't have a right to be a public safety hazard.
Persephonee · 22-25, F
Depending on context (should the govt demand a private business enforces a mask mandate? No - but should the business have their own mandate? Probably a good idea to anyway).

But only if we can divorce a temporary mask wearing order from the sense of intolerable self-righteous smugness with which some people enjoy enforcing it.

It may be for sound public health reasons, but the current plague has empowered whole batallions of fluorescent-tabard-wearing minihitlers. They are enough to make me want to cough over everyone.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Persephonee People who get infected in private businesses and then sick as a result of it will still affect the (public) community, hence masks are reasonably enforced also there.

A significant number of people don't want to get an avoidable risk because of someone who's too inconvenienced by having to wear a piece of cloth in front of their mouth, so you can bet there'll be hostility towards these subjects.
Persephonee · 22-25, F
@Elessar it's not the hostility I object to actually, as you're completely right. It's the smugness!
Graylight · 51-55, F
On federal property, it's now required. Any local authorities may mandate it if they choose, and the Republicans themselves have fought for the right of any business owner to turn away customers.

Only when all the population has access to the vaccine then hell yes
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User I suppose that's fair.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@SW-User It'll be a long while until the entire world has access to a vaccine. And while that doesn't happen, active replication from which potentially immunity-escaping variants can originate from will always be a risk, so even if the mandate is dropped nothing guarantees it won't be re-enacted anytime soon.
