This depends almost entirely on where you are. If you're on federal property, no, they should not be optional. If you're in a privately owned business, then technically that's up to the business owner to decide. I would very heavily encourage them to require mask-wearing though. If you're, like, driving in your car or at your house well then yeah it's a little silly to be wearing a mask.

To be honest with you, I've been wearing masks in some public spaces for many years before the coronavirus. Particularly in subway tunnels. I've read a lot about how dirty the air is in the subway tunnel and it grosses me out, so I usually wear a scarf or bandana around my mouth and nose while waiting for the train.

The reason for wearing it in the car is that you don't want to handle if with dirty hands or hang it / make it touch surfaces after you've been in a place where it was mandatory/necessary. At least for me personally, I don't touch it until I'm at home, so that excludes removing it while I'm driving.

@Elessar I sometimes will wear a face covering in my car if it's really cold. It's fuckin' 4 degrees Fahrenheit right now so it is kinda nice to have something to keep my face warm, so long as it doesn't obstruct my vision.

@BlueMetalChick Yeah, they provide some nice additional warmth in winter, the problem will be Summer here.
