What's the difference between cultural appropriation and adopting/assimilating new cultural practices?

I love those things.
Wedgy · 31-35, F
Definition of culture appropriate:
the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society.
"his dreadlocks were widely criticized as another example of cultural appropriation"
I feel like if this was about mocking someone culture then culture appropriate would be a bad thing, but if you’re just enjoying to do different things outside of your culture, then it’s fine.
Also, literally ever culture has dreadlocks in them
@Wedgy

It's a line i'm not sure of. Of course mocking someone's culture or using it as a joke would count but what about adopting parts of the language or attire?
I don't know

@Pikachu if you learn a different language and where a different style of dress, (for example) then those idiots clearly had some learning difficulties.
I’m not too sure about wearing special clothes
(like religious ones), as that could maybe be the expected to the rule

knowing the history behind it and educating yourself on something before you do or wear something culture related

Good question, and I wish an answer had jumped to mind. I think it's it's done with understanding and respect for the culture itself or the symbol in question, then it really shouldn't be viewed in a bad light. Taking cultural elements and using them incorrectly, ignorantly or in an ironic manner, I'd call that appropriation. For instance, those beads on a chain with a Crucifix we Catholics use to pray with? That's a rosary and it is never, ever a necklace.
@Graylight

Yeah there are some thins which definitely are cultural appropriation. I'm just not sure where the line is
To me what I have seen is taking or using things from a culture but then hating anything else about the people/culture that you find no use for. Sadly I've seen that in family members. And when I saw that I was like, yep that is definitely appropriated.

@BobGrant45 no it’s not LMAOOO if a non arab girl wears an abaya as a halloween costume she’s getting all the smoke. same thing kaitlyn poopy pants should’ve got when she wore a “native american” costume and walked around making fun of the genocide of their people. disgusting.

Pfff idk I once offended someone for saying their name was hard to pronounce
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
@Wedgy Soufiane haha but he said it with a thick accent so I didn't know what he was saying
SW-User
@SkeetSkeet if you only said that it was hard to pronounce, they did overreact. but i’ve had white americans who literally mock my name when i introduce myself. i don’t say my full name on here but this one lady named karen literally said “marlalalala” when i told her my name. like where the fuck did this lady even get the L sound😐 some people are really outta pocket, i should’ve said something
@SW-User

Definitely a difference between failing to pronounce a name or apologizing for not being able to pronounce it and mocking it.
