What's the difference between cultural appropriation and adopting/assimilating new cultural practices?

To me what I have seen is taking or using things from a culture but then hating anything else about the people/culture that you find no use for. Sadly I've seen that in family members. And when I saw that I was like, yep that is definitely appropriated.
