In your opinion why are there so many homeless people in LA and San Francisco ?

In Alameda County, the number of homeless residents jumped 43 percent over the past two years. In Orange County, that number was 42 percent. Kern County volunteers surveying the region’s homeless population found a 50 percent increase over 2018. San Francisco notched a 17 percent increase since 2017.

And on Tuesday, Los Angeles officials released the results of their most recent count: Homelessness was up by 12 percent over last year in the county and up 16 percent in the City of Los Angeles.

That puts L.A. County’s homeless population at 58,936 and the city’s at 36,300.

First, the warm weather makes California perfect if you wish to live in a tent.

The homeless population is increasing because radical progressives in government in California, (like the Governor and the Mayors of these respective cities, and their city boards), have forbidden the police to move the homeless encampments without 48 hours notice. This makes their sidewalk encampments extremely difficult to remove, because the residents simply move to another spot, and then they can't be identified easily.

The Homeless have civil activist lawyers working pro bono, and if one of the homeless is forcibly evicted, the lawyers step in and sue. It is these activist lawyers who are really the huge problem.

Another enormous problem is Anti-Fa, who issue death threats to the citizens who try to stop the homeless from camping in front of their homes and businesses. Anti-Fa threatened citizens recently in El Dorado, a suburb of San Francisco.

Additionally, these cities have set up safe sites for the homeless drug abusers to go and get free needles and a safe place to inject themselves.

It's like putting out cheese and then wondering why you have rats. Oh...did I mention the rats?

If you can imagine raw sewage from 60,000 people flowing into the LA basin, untreated, and flowing directly out to sea, the environmentalists there should be screaming to high heaven...but they are conveniently silent, because saying something might not be politically correct. The raw sewage continues to flow directly into the ocean, contaminating beaches for five miles north and five miles south of the LA basin outlet.

@4meAndyou SF has safe needle exchange but not injection sites. That bill was vetoed.

1. I believe in rent control

2. I believe it should be illegal to fire an employee, but the employers should work with the employees to send them to rehab, counseling, training etc.

3. The mentally ill needs to be given a room and we have enough money without raising taxes, if politicians weren't so greedy with high salaries of $100,000 -$400,000 a year, 5 times the average salary of the population in the USA.

4. Some people lost their houses because they lost their jobs, and the banks kicked them out. It should be illegal for banks not to help families who have financial hardship, not just kick them out. So now we have millions of kids who were traumatised by seeing their parents fall apart and their pets go to shelters, and losing their friends when they have to move.

5. Some people lost their car when they lost their jobs. And if there were great mass transits they can get another job! We ned better mass transits for the young, the old, the handicapped.It would save money in the long run.

6. The car industry should not be allowed to bribe or lobby to take trains, and busses away because they want to make more money and sell more cars and politicians can be bought because they have enough money for a car so who cares about poor people without a car to get to work?

@Spoiledbrat Excactly! Please answer my post and take the poll 🙂
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Carazaa We have rent control in SF. It's hard to say that it really helped all that much. I guess it keeps the neighborhoods from too much churn, but it's far from a panacea - and people whose incomes didn't keep pace with the area can become remarkably vulnerable and trapped after a while. It's also just as likely to help the wealthy as it does the needy, while boosting prices for those looking.

I'm quite torn on the practice tbh. Yet at the same time, ending now that it's become entrenched, would create immeasurable pain.
Carazaa · F
@QuixoticSoul OK I have had renters in my condo in southern ca. in the past and I believe in rent control, and personally I always believe we need to care more about people than our pocketbooks. That's how I run my business too. People first, then money.
Thats pretty impressive for two years, which happen to be under Trump. If I was into conspiracy theories, I might speculate that he had something to do with it. But I'm not.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@MistyCee, I certainly would never expect him to even care about this issue.
@Peapod He's really into solving environmental issues in States he has beefs with.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@MistyCee ...ha! Something like that.
Fernie · F
Even with 2 jobs people cannot afford the rents now...landlords need to be overseen...they GAUGE and that is illegal. I lived in my car for 7 months while working 2 jobs...through no fault of my own...it happens all the time...WORKING POOR I believe the term is.
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Fernie...YIKES! That is a little disconcerting to say the least.
Fernie · F
@Peapod If you ever have a moment...research the MANY MANY similarities between trump and every other murderous dictator throughout history...trump has idolized them all of his unhinged life...which makes him a thousand times more dangerous than many know
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Fernie, makes me very sad that I live amongst people that could ever elect such a man. I swear this is not a Dem vs. Republican thing either. I didn't care for some of our past presidents, but this one has zero morals from what I know. He is scary and we are very fortunate to at least live in a time where murder on a large scale would not go unseen like it once did. I would also like to believe there is still enough sensible people in our country that would never look the other way either.
Cant afford the rents

Everyone wants to live in those cities. They are basically the most populated cities besides NY so obviously there will be more homeless as well. Also San Fran and LA not too far behind has the highest rent prices in the nation so people who are paycheck to paycheck or are lured in to make money can easily become homeless.
Those cities have good weather year round which makes for easier living on the streets. A large homeless population does attract other homeless as well.
Nimbus · M
@REMsleep Interesting.
Shayla · F
Some states offer homeless people a bus ticket to California where the weather is more survivable on the streets

Democrats wanted to take care of illegal immigrants and their supporters agreed.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@MrBrownstone The illegals have jobs - and work hard to keep them lmao.

SF and LA homeless, like in the rest of the country, are overwhelmingly white and black folks. Think about it for a bit.

Sadly....

Millions of people in this country are one paycheck away from being homeless... And once homeless.. their health will often take a very minor turn and they can't pay that bill,... which will then ruin any credit they have left, and in most cases that results in them becoming forever homeless.

I get to see them everyday. It is depressing.
Nimbus · M
@Threepio A vicious circle :(
AbbeyRhode · F
Because it's a Sanctuary State, run by liberals. They can't support the people who are already there, and yet they encourage hordes of illegals, who bring with them drugs, disease, and crime. They disrespect the police and ICE, and curse Trump, then hold their hands out when their idiotic policies inevitably fail.
Nimbus · M
@AbbeyRhode Wow, that's an idiotic policy.
AbbeyRhode · F
@Nimbus That's liberals for you.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
They can live without freezing in winter and the local economy offers some hope of support from charities, government and the public. Plus people tend to be a little less judgemental on the coast. I cant see a person getting by in the bible belt without being picked on by the locals or the law.
Nimbus · M
@whowasthatmaskedman Does the same apply to Florida?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Nimbus In terms of the weather, Yes.. But the local govt is less poor friendly. I know its a stereotype that Florida is full of retirees and real estate developments. But the West Coast does have a larger and more diverse economy.
Without doing research I’d say it’s because they’re expensive cities to live in.
Valerian · 100+, M
@Spoiledbrat Awww! Those druggies can afford to rent a 400 Square Foot Ghetto Studio (no Utilities included) for $1700/month!
But they'd have to give up their Drugs and Food!
That’s a lot for even me to pay. @Valerian
Valerian · 100+, M
@Spoiledbrat Yup!
Then you'd have to commute 25 miles to work, because there's no cheaper housing closer!
Peapod · 61-69, F
I can't speak for L.A., but I have been to San Francisco. I was shocked at the number of homeless right there in some of the most beautiful spots. I had heard that in the late 60's, kids flocked there by the tens of thousands, thinking it would be quite the utopia with cheap or free housing and food. Sadly, a lot of those same kids became addicted to hard drugs and found out the hard way that the city simply could not provide for them. Many never left, given the temperate climate year round. Heartbreaking to see.
Nimbus · M
@Peapod It is sad.
I went there in '94 and never saw a single homeless person :(
Peapod · 61-69, F
@Nimbus, I was there in 2011. Maybe in the 90's, they had better housing. Most of the homeless I saw were seniors too. They were not young people.
abe182 · 51-55, M
Housing is way too expensive
Valerian · 100+, M
@abe182 But the Panhandling is excellent in busy rich California cities!
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Nimbus Always a struggle to build enough, in what is some of the most expensive real-estate in the world. But it's not just affordable housing, it's housing, period. One thing the Trump administration got right about any of this is in its condemnation of NIMBYs.
abe182 · 51-55, M
@Nimbus not much of it because no one wants it. Brings down precious property values.

I have trouble following this article: Is it saying the homeless are following the money?

"And yet, communities around the state have been funneling more money into services for the homeless, like L.A.’s Measure H sales tax, which is adding about $355 million each year to the arsenal.

And almost 1,400 permanent supportive housing units built with money from Measure HHH, a $1.2 billion bond, are set to open in the 2019-20 fiscal year."

Wow - sounds like a lot of money - so super high taxes...and they talk about 100,000 homeless which the dollars quoted at $15K per person...I highly doubt that....sorry if I'm being thick...
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@fun4us2b The factor that may be throwing you is the size of the state economy, which can easily raise those sums without a massive tax hike. This isnt West Virginia here.
The captain is. He’s loaded. @fun4us2b

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
The price of rents have increased so much, wondering how illegal population has impacted those costs.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti I see.
Maybe there should be a cap on prices for homes so that those on low incomes CAN afford them.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Nimbus Part of the problem is zoning laws. At one time the USA had a lot of boarding room homes. A single person could rent a room with a shared bathroom, no need to rent an entire apartment. The rent was affordable. Most were outlawed by city councils so that new upscale housing or condos could be built. Also most cities have restrictions on tiny homes being built. There should be something done about this. Small families can live in those, it’s better than being homeless and the price of utilities to heat or a/c them would be much lower than a regular size house or apartment.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti I see.

We have homes like that where facilities are shared.
Echoing · 61-69, F
My opinion why... the state is warm and dry. That simple. There are two main worries of homeless folks...keeping warm and dry.

@Echoing What about Texas, it's hot there?

Weather amenable to unsheltered living in both summer and winter.

Local authorities aren't quite as dedicated to fucking them as hard as they are elsewhere. Relative abundance of soup kitchens, etc.

Sky high rent, and a high concentration of people that can afford it.

New York has more homeless people than any other city in the USA and it snows there so this is NOT a weather problem this is a financial problem that is ignored by Americans.

@Nimbus I don't know where you live but it's not that easy. Even with homeless resources, it's difficult for people. Lots of these people lost their homes and jobs. People who have resources always think it's easy. It's obviously not. Throw in mental illness or drug addiction and it's not easy at all.
San Francisco is a haven for liberalism and out of liberalism comes tolerance, then ultra tolerance, and eventually ends up being a place for diseased BUMS and illegals to do their business. Usually on the sidewalk.
