Absolutely. We are a stunningly beautiful, resourceful, progressive and diverse nation, from the people to the landscape. We have plenty to work on, but we've always been willing to do the work.

Very few people think that America isn’t great. In general, people tend to disagree about how to make it greater, and the best ways to live up to the ideals it was founded on.
Ok, the MAGA set thinks America isn’t great, but they’re a confused and intellectually limited set of people.

@QuixoticSoul MAGA is ridiculous, it sets the notion that we should roll up our collective sleeves and make the country great the way it was. But what is the time frame for "was" ?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@MarmeeMarch That’s just the start of the problem with the whole thing.
Funny thing is that many periods these people fondly look back on were either bloody awful for people like themselves - or would be branded as straight socialism by today’s rightoids.
1950s tax rates when 😂

@QuixoticSoul I dont mind looking back in time when I was growing up - and thinking of the good things, places and people that gave be a very nice childhood - to young manhood. But I take exception to the idea that America is not great all of a sudden and it has not been great for a long time and that we need to do something. Exactly what ?

We WERE a great nation. We were rich, we were strong militarily, we had a standard of living that was the envy of many nations all over the world, and we enjoyed freedoms that had never been enjoyed by ANY people at ANY time in history.
People called us "the great experiment". A capitalist democratic Republic had never been tried before as a form of government. We had seen the results of monarchies, of communism, of fascist governments, of socialist governments, and we saw all those forms of government fail again and again. We were something new.
We were NOT perfect...and we still are not perfect. We have a great deal of baggage to overcome and I would say we have come a very long way. We have built upon the past...and that is why it is so important never to forget the past, or forget our history.
Recently we have recovered some of our wealth, we have restored most of our former military strength, and we are still fighting to keep our standards of living high, and we are fighting hard to hold onto our Constitutional rights and freedoms.
I believe we are a great nation. I do not believe that vicious rhetoric or abusive language or wild and accusatory language make us great...just the opposite. That sort of language makes us LESS...inferior.
But I believe that people can learn better ways, and, as in any nation of the people, for the people and by the people, in time we will arrive at compromises that will make at least half our people grudgingly happy and at least half will be grumpy. That Never Changes.

@TheyWhoseNameCanNotBeSpoken I mean, a lot of that is simple capability. Those that *can* emigrate to another first-world nation are the ones for whom the setup is working well to begin with.
The average American (the 80% who live paycheck to paycheck) would often be better off somewhere else. But they don’t have the money, education, or career prospects required to easily navigate the system - or the vision to actually understand they’d be better off to begin with. US is literally all they know, they aren’t even in a position to make an informed choice.

@QuixoticSoul I would Def immigrate out. But you really hit the nail on the head with why it is hard to when it is all you've known and living from check to check gives you no opportunity to save to move.

Our economic system is not designed to last for a thousand years, in fact, the way our government keeps borrowing money the whole system will collapse is a few decades, if that long.

I think if both sides stop posturing and start listening to one another perhaps something positive can come out of this situation. Somehow, I don't think that is going to happen ...

Well it depends on how you measure 'greatness'. If you are talking about median incomes , standard of living , cost of healthcare and basic education then I think there are probably better places to live.
What it is fast becoming however is a pariah nation and the re-election of Trump would probably confirm that in very short order.

That's not the rivalry.
It's a nation.

@canusernamebemyusername probably the most correct answer you could find.

Best and greatest nation on earth.
JBird · F
Well, still better than the country I belong to
MarmeeMarch · M
The best on the planet. No wonder people are literally dying to get in.
WalksWith · 56-60, F
This country is beautifully flawed. It's not perfect, but, we've had some greatness. Now, however, we are not so great, imo.
ImKelsey · 26-30, F
Canada is the true north, strong and free.

The US survived some of the stupidest presidents such as reagan, bush 43 and will survive even the current Nimrod in office.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
If the US isn't as great as many claim, then why the hell do we have the biggest problem with immigration/people trying to get in? 🤔
Cierzo · M
A great nation and an awful empire.
