It seems like christians are the worst about this. Maybe I'm a little biased though being a non-believer in a place that's 99% christian.
SW-User
@Samson I am a Christian myself, and sadly I have to say that is true.

abe182 · 51-55, M
That means the state government or federal government cannot tell you which church to attend or have a national religion. Nothing more than that.
@abe182 My vote for Best answer.

Part of the reason our country is so special, and part of the reason people love the principle on which it was founded was precisely BECAUSE other countries persecuted people with whose religion they did not agree. The Pilgrims came here to escape persecution and to obtain freedom to believe in the exact way that they wished.

Unfortunately, they turned around and persecuted and banished preachers within their governmental jurisdiction who did not agree with their views.

I guess you could say that it is a universal human failing to believe VERY strongly in certain things (like religion) and to either try to convert all those within earshot or to hate anyone who doesn't agree wholeheartedly with whatever you happen to believe.

Most religions believe that they MUST convert others, in order to save their souls from damnation, and that by saving souls they, themselves, will receive an extra helping of blessings.

So, even though the proselytizers can be super annoying, at least here they are free to practice their religion as they wish (with the exception of violating our laws).

Because Freedom of Speech
TeirdalinFirefall · 31-35, M
Because one of the main goals of each religion is to convert everyone else to it.

Thus they each just do whatever they can to convert the others; not much the country can do about that aside from just banning religion- which isn't going to happen. lol
SW-User
@TeirdalinFirefall Exactly, if religion is banned completely then that would be going against the Constitution.
SW-User
unfortunately that is the drawback of religion. they all think they are the only one.. which is why I am non religious but am spiritual in my own way. obviously there is more than one god in this world.. lets just accept that
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
Freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion.
SW-User
@hippyjoe1955 Exactly.
SW-User
You can worship any way you want but you should realize people will always try to convert you from your "wrong" way of thinking and believe as they do.
SW-User
@SW-User That is the truth.
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
It is a freedom for America but inside any Religions are not because of laws man made other than the Holy Spirit
SW-User
@FreestyleArt Amen...
well, we have this freedom of expression as well as freedom of religion.

The trying of having the seat that is moral superiority. You see it a lot in Christmas and atheist a like.
msros · F
I think Sharia law would be the best thing.

And I am jealous of you people, lol.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@msros Yeah freedom sucks.
msros · F
@GunSmoke9 😂
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
Because monotheist religions which happen to be the major ones each run under the doctrine that their God is the right one. When you view your deity as an actual being with feelings, it becomes more complicated and tribal.
SpaceJesus · 41-45
And you're just getting that?
SW-User
@SpaceJesus No or else I wouldn't have asked this question.
SpaceJesus · 41-45
Keep on searching for the truth
You might as well ask why freedom speech
Because we're assholes.

We take our first amendment freedom of speech to mean the right to say anything we want anywhere we want-- with no consequences. And we take the free assembly clause as the right to force religion on anyone we want in any context.

All because of freedom. Or some idea of it.

Used to be we actually understood 1A to apply to restrictions enacted by Congress or bodies empowered by Congress. And not be assholes.
@GunSmoke9 When and where I came up, almost everyone was part of a faith community. But nobody got in anyone's face about it. A lot of people from Euro-trash immigrant families, like mine. You could get a good guess sometimes from surnames. Or from religious hardware. Cross-- not a Catholic of any kind. Crucifix-- Catholic, maybe the rite is ambiguous. Kippah-- that's obvious. Or you could tell from what holidays and rituals people did. Or when they did them. Oh, you're doing Christmas later, must be Orthodox. Ashes-- Catholic. And so on. But nobody got in anyone's face. Nobody sent up flares. Nobody fought with anyone, tried to get into religious arguments, tried to convert random people or people in their closest circle.

Now I'm in a different time and place, and it's bizarre to me. People flat out asking me my religion. Asking if I'm saved. I'm not talking friends. I'm talking coworkers, students, customers. People making public comments and commentaries about my faith. I'm not talking about in a church or temple. I'm talking about at work, school. Getting approached, while minding my own business, sitting in a cafe. Getting approached in the Books A Million religion section. My house pamphleted. Getting my car pamphleted if a park near a church. Having a pastor of a church I went to showing up at my house. Missionaries showing up at my house until I drive them off.

Sure. That's all protected speech. And sure that's their expression of their faith. But that's also being an asshole.
GunSmoke9 · 56-60, M
@CopperCicada Seems that is what you were implying. You really can't separate first amendment from assholes.
@GunSmoke9 No. The 1A doesn't protect one from assholes.

Manners is what protects one from assholes, but for some reason we've decided "freedom of speech" means one can drop all manners and say and do whatever one wishes.

I've never argued for 1A restrictions. I've argued for manners and basic decency.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
Because the number one freedom is the right to be an asshole
YoungPoet345 · 26-30, F
Freedom of speech, otherwise known as the right to be an asshole.

@plungesponge Yeah, apparently 😂. @YoungPoet345
