Isn't there freedom of religion in America?

So why on Earth do we keep trying to shove our beliefs down each other's throats when we are free to believe in whatever we want in this country?

Part of the reason our country is so special, and part of the reason people love the principle on which it was founded was precisely BECAUSE other countries persecuted people with whose religion they did not agree. The Pilgrims came here to escape persecution and to obtain freedom to believe in the exact way that they wished.

Unfortunately, they turned around and persecuted and banished preachers within their governmental jurisdiction who did not agree with their views.

I guess you could say that it is a universal human failing to believe VERY strongly in certain things (like religion) and to either try to convert all those within earshot or to hate anyone who doesn't agree wholeheartedly with whatever you happen to believe.

Most religions believe that they MUST convert others, in order to save their souls from damnation, and that by saving souls they, themselves, will receive an extra helping of blessings.

So, even though the proselytizers can be super annoying, at least here they are free to practice their religion as they wish (with the exception of violating our laws).
