Do you think there should be an upper age limit on voting?

There is a minimum age to vote - do you think there should be an upper limit too, as those at the other end of the spectrum are down to their last decade or so of life and shouldn't get a say in major decisions affecting all those generations behind them that will have to live with the consequences (i.e. Brexit and the divide between how the older / younger generations voted)
I don't think it's a good idea to eliminate the voters who have had the most opportunity to gain wisdom, and the slippery slope bothers me.

@jackjjackson Back to your meaningless memes when you have nothing to contribute. The 60% love America more than you ever will. They love the nation, not a small-handed third-rate dictator that you worship.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Nothing to contribute? As if your perpetual whining is a contribution 😂 @windinhishair
BlueRain · F
No because they have the most life experience. They should be respected.
revenant · F
@BlueRain more wisdom very often
BlueRain · F
Exactly!
Republicans already have seen to that in their constant effort to suppress votes. By requiring state ID's like Driver's Licenses they have already restricted who can vote. Anyone who is in a senior center and no long drives--or who is disabled at any age and never did drive (or don't anymore)---lost their right to vote because they cannot produce a driver's license at a polling place. People of that age--or disabled don't have passports either because they are no longer able to travel---so the Republicans have already screwed those segments of society.

Why? Because disabled and seniors overwhelming depend on Medicaid......and in a Republicans mind if you use or need Medicaid you are automatically a socialist.....so you MUST be a Dem voter. So to make sure those people don't vote Dem--or even take a chance they might--Republicans placed a drivers license restriction on them in state after state-----and then disguised that screw job as "we MUST do this to make sure those dreaded illegals don't vote"...........when they can't anyway. The "Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996" takes care of that issue and it's never been repealed......so the "drivers license requirement to stop Mexicans from voting" was just another GOP con job.
Hell, no. That’s outrageous. Anything suggesting that the elderly be disenfranchised solely based on age is ridiculous, since not everyone old becomes mentally unsound. They remain citizens and should retain their vote as citizens.
revenant · F
no. They contributed to the world and they have to have their say too.

They are the most educated to what’s going on in the world many times.
Here in America, The Democrats were grabbing at straws recently with a 16 y/o voting age suggestion. That said...you can't drink until you're 18 or older in many states, most likely need a driver's permit at 16, though no military draft in place, we probably would not draft 16 year olds. With the gun issue ages have increased to above 18 to 21 or older, but they wanted, not quite fully educated (and that's not a slight at 16 y/o) to vote. Those at the end of their spectrum as you say, either have voted and contributed to their country, and should not be denied the right to vote. As for consequences, those who are the generations behind them at the current age(s) to allow voting if they chose to do so, could reverse the consequences you mention (in your case Brexit)

I would never eliminate the older generations. They are very wise and have a lot of experience. I’d rather have them voting then a 20 something year old personally.

@Keepitsimple Exactly

I would like to sit back and eat popcorn and watch the riots and the uproar when you try to remove the voting rights from elderly black people.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
This post had zero to do with race. @4meAndyou
4meAndyou · F
@luckranger71 You are missing the point. "The elderly" are of all races. However, the vote is a particularly explosive point with black voters, who would also be included in the disenfranchisement of the elderly, because they were and sometimes are disenfranchised in the south. If you try to take the vote away from one black man or one black woman, that powderkeg will light right up. Boom.
in10RjFox · M
Most definitely. In fact those above 60 need not vote at all as they are outdated and just dont let future take over.
in10RjFox · M
@jackjjackson no.. I don't like anything from a SWINE..
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Took you only 3 hours 48 minutes to come up with that gem. Good one 😉 @in10RjFox
in10RjFox · M
@jackjjackson it just took me a few seconds after I woke up. 😎
Zonuss · 41-45, M
No. I think it would only be fair to allow those who are willing and able to vote. Noone is a danger to the voting system just because of their age, religion, or ideology. The only thing that is dangerous is not using your right to vote if you have the chance. 🙂
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Zonuss This really is a new day! A agree with every word you wrote there.

Good job.
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
No. But cue the crusty bitter folks who want to raise the minimum age to 21, 25, etc.

@calnative Just think, you might participate in the process, express your ideas, campaign for the candidates who most follow your ideals, and vote for those candidates. Or sit on your whump and bitch. Your choice
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
No, but we do have to recognize that some people lose their faculties. Alzheimer's and dementia render someone functionally incapable of voting, but there is no mechanism to stop someone in those circumstances from voting. Sadly, what tends to result is voter fraud by their children and caretakers.
Theseus · 46-50, M
No. I think only those over forty should get to vote. 😊
I think that a person should have to write an examination and pass before qualifying to vote for each time they wish to vote.
In Imperial China, The Emperor was born to his station, but directly under him was the Mandarinate. This was a body of ministers (or advisers), each chosen by written examination. The one with the best aptitude in agriculture would be chosen as minister of agriculture. All the various ministers were chosen similarly. People from any class of life could write these examinations, so even the poorest farmer could end up serving directly under the Emperor. All that was required was to excel in skill and knowledge of a certain field. in our system, virtually all are lawyers and little else and rarely pay more than a nod to the real experts in a field.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
If they still have their wits about them they should vote.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson Good question. Hospital records? Routine testing of 30-somethings for dementia and Alzheimer’s is a waste of money, but there are a whole range of injuries and conditions etc that would render someone incapable of voting at any age.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
When I go to vote I take a doctor’s note just in case. @QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson Smart!
Hello, either satirical one or someone lost in obscurity, I'm over 60, am educated, and can and will vote. But, why do you say that? How old are you? Tell us, and I might have some rebuttals to your buffoonary!@in10RjFox
absolutely not! removal of voting for any particular group is just the key that can be used to disenfranchise any group.
as far as
affecting all those generations behind them that will have to live with the consequences
yeah. like leaving valuables to your descendants. while i have met mad old fuckers,, who just want to burn it all down, MOST of the elders i have met, want the next generations to have it better.

also it is the YOUNGER generations ( brexit) that are the least educated by fact and the most easy to sway by shallow rhetoric , as most have never been exposed to the process of logic, or critical thinking
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
When I was 18, I thought my old man was the dumbest sob in the world. By the time I turned 23 I was surprised how much the old boy had picked up in the past few years
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@sunsporter1649 A Mark Twain fan I see.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@windinhishair And Will Rogers, too
Since we tend to have a world war like clockwork everytime the last generation who fought are no longer around to smack the young hotheads I don't think less people with decades of wisdom is a good idea.
lizzy96 · 26-30, F
no its already shown that the younger voters go to the polls more often ( I've learned through my government classes). If we increase the voting age you'll just discourage us younger voters.
ladycae · 100+, F
drivers license needs don't disenfranchise the elderly. you can get a legal state ID from the DMV that can be used as a drivers license ID.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
No. Disenfranchisement of people based on age is bigotry and outright institutional oppression. A child cannot vote because their brains aren't developed enough to make an informed decision. An adult brain is, including that of elders.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
I have doubts about the individual asking the question. @basilfawlty89
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
Of course not but many responses to this would be reasons for at least lowering the minimum voting age.
you do have a point but you dont know when it their last decade - as you put it
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Of course not.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Haven’t you read my thread regarding age limits for candidates?
