So ANTIFA....opinions?

I mean I'm sure everyone has opinions about them...I have opinions myself of course.

They are after all a very controversial group as of recent.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
It's a mildly alarming but unsurprising trend, considering the rise in popularity for fascist ideals. I'm not worried about them specifically in the slightest, more just worried that they could be an early precursor to a new civil war in America.

@TotalMiss I feel you and I are wasting our time on snowflakes that either cannot read or are too lazy to really get into the details that will enlighten them. Or due to poor parenting and bad genetics they are are fatally stupid. I quit.

The fact that anti-fascists have become controversial says a lot about the society we live in.

They claim to be "ANTI-FAscism" but employ fascist tactics to squelch any speech they oppose. I'm not a fan.

I believe in free speech, tons of it. I want my philosophical opponents to reveal their ugliness and stupidity with their own words. I think the more speech we have (good, bug, and ugly) the better off we are as a society.

If the white supremacist scum were to voice their opinions often enough, society would more clearly recognize them for who they are and would reject their ideology outright. By forcing their speech underground, we help them hide from the scrutiny of public opinion.
Woke AF ☝️

@sarabee1995 Good point. And a few years ago I would have agreed with you entirely. Not so sure now.

I think their hearts in the right place. I know people like to argue that you can't meet violence with violence. I think that is right 98% of the time. When Nazi's start marching in the streets, that's the other 2% of the time.

If Antifa was rioting in the streets on a regular basis, again, maybe a cause for concern, but I haven't seen Antifa out marching unless it was to counter protest the alt-right.

We do not need to be tolerant of anti-tolerance.
Pherick · 41-45, M
@TotalMiss I honestly don't even know how to respond to your babbling. I am not aware that anyone has lost any seats in Congress? Was there a special election I missed?

I feel about Muslims like I feel about most people. Eh.

@TotalMiss I don't think they're a particular threat. Neither are antifa, really - they're even less organized. But yes, many of those organizations fit under the umbrella.

I'm a hardcore Progressive and see them in much the same way as I see the fascists.
Weak, cowardly, ignorant, young people who need an enemy to blame for their own shitty choices. My issue is that they're giving the scum EXACTLY what they want. Both sides live for being persecuted. It's gutless.
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
@Ynotisay Agreed, this will only end badly for the people of America...they need to use reasoning instead of fear, if they are going to get what they want.

But no, violence seems to be their first option at every turn.
@Ynotisay this is always what happens when protest groups totally mirror their adversaries. they become images of them. if you look at the white supremacist and other forums, this mirrored response is expected and even required for their objectives.

on a meta-level this violence is also what is required for the federal government to push farther and deeper in a continued project of attenuating our freedoms.
Ynotisay · M
@CopperCicada For our own safety, right?
acpguy · C
These folks are actually Nazis no different than the skin heads, they just proclaim a different side. Extremists are all the same and want to limit free speech of opposing groups. These ill parented children need to be thrown in prison no matter what side they are on.

They are another terrorist group....using violence and intimidation to achieve political aims.
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
@bowman81 Tis' the definition yes...something a lot of people are willing to ignore if it means they get what they want.
katielass · F
@Fangirlsarah1996 Yes, they are called useful idiots. And they will ignore what they are told to ignore because their minds are manipulated, they cannot think for themselves, and thus are very late to realize they have been used and are no longer useful. Imagine how utterly stupid people feel when they finally realize they were only a useful idiot.
Cierzo · M
These people seem to understand what antifa is

Ynotisay · M
@Cierzo The name is new to the U.S. And, for the most part, so are ignorant, cowardly white boys marching in the street.
Cierzo · M
@Ynotisay You are lucky in America if this is new to you. Clashes between far-right/neo-nazis and Antifa have been frequent in Europe. Most people see them as idiotic fights among young brats with high testosterone and very little brains. The problem may be the media making it look much bigger than it really is.
Ynotisay · M
@Cierzo Yeah...since the 60's we've been able to tamp it down. But with a President sending dog whistles to a certain portion of our population they feel emboldened to crawl out from under their rocks. They'll disappear again.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Obama should be prosecuted
at a factual level, i see them as no different than the groups they protest. their language is protected by the first amendment which i hold sacrosanct. violent actions are subject to prosecution.

the only thing that bothers me about what's going on-- are the voices who believe that antifa and the people they protest should not have this voice, however disagreeable it may be.

it also bothers me that nonviolent protest and civil disobedience is demonized.

that said, one reason i'm committed to non-violent protest is that one tends to just mirror one's opponent when one is violent.

@TotalMiss In Boston, the alt-right folks got to speak, there were just 40 of them or so and 25,000 counter protestors, so it was kind of hard to hear them :)

I don't know much about them. Apparently they cause a bit of property damage. Troublesome, but at least they haven't driven a car into a crowd of people.
