How to respond?

Im having back pain still from chiropractor last week..my back realllyy hurt last week after a treatment, when it typically does not do that. But I'm there primarily for realigning my jaw, so I'd like to take a break from back treatments. Im going to say "I would like to only do jaw now, my back is sore", but last time when my back was tender, they said "You still need the treatment, even if sore, and that it would help it." I truly dont want another back adjustment so how do I respond if they say that? I really hate confrontation 🙁

You respond by saying no. That you don’t want a back treatment and you are only there for your jaw.

Call them at least 24 hours in advance telling them that you are only going to be receiving jaw treatment and no back treatment.

Does your quackropractor have X-ray machines? Better yet have they scheduled you for a MRI before treatment?

I received Back manipulations for an entire year and I was feeling like it was getting worse but he said it takes some discomfort before you get better.

He created a herniated disc at my L4-5

Never again! Proper body imaging and physical therapy is the best course of action.

@gdon39 I will just say when i get there for that day, please dont do back today, EVEN if they say it will make the pain better. I just dont want it. And then i feel im being difficult or something. 😢 but yes i believe doing just jaw is needed. Im sorry of your back aww. They did one x ray before treatment last year.. no MRI

@gdon39 Yep.. sometimes Chiros get to rough on the spine. I see one pretty often but I keep em on my T-spine area and don't let em mess with my neck or any surgery area. They can get too rough and do damage. Sorry about the herniation... that crap HURTS. I am suffering now with one in my neck/ thorasic spine.
Now you need to repeat that this back treatment is not helping you and you withdraw your consent for them to continue treatments on your back. Make it clear to them that they are there to treat your jaw and your jaw only.

If they proceed to attempt treatment after that, they do so without your consent and they're open to assault charges.

It's also worth calling another chiropractor and enquiring if it's common to do this back treatment with the treatment for your jaw problem - just to see if they are overstepping the line in some way.

@HootyTheNightOwl Ty for your words and replies on this, appreciate it friend!🌺
@Coralmist If they keep being pushy, then you may have no option but to look elsewhere.

Geeze...I know that acupuncture is one of those treatments where you either love it or hate it - but I never had a treatment that made me hurt for two days like you describe. Not even when she put her hand straight on the muscle and moved it. I felt the muscle move under her hand, but it wasn't a painful experience... more of a warm sensation and a feeling of relief.

The worst thing I felt was after my first treatment when I went to McDonald's and this little crotch goblin decided to run full pelt straight across that area of my back. That was down to the parents for not controlling the little hellion.

It's not fair that they should make you suffer and call the pain "Progress" - when you are clearly not progressing anywhere. Do they even know whether your back issue is muscular or a nervous system problem??? That alone would be enough to make me stop the treatment... I was nervous about getting my back treated for that very reason.

@HootyTheNightOwl Thats the thing, I didnt come in with a back issue...and my back is observed every year by my doc at physical. They listened about my jaw issue then had me do x ray of spine and back...saying it was all basically integral and that most need b a ck alignment in addition. So essentially i had no problem..althoigh they said on x ray, See here? Your spine curves at top and that needs to be straight...because I was in dire need of jaw treatment I basically let them do back, but it has never hurt in a year like it did last week. So while it was a random thing that the tool hit it wrong, I just cant chance that pain again. Ty again for your ideas, it meant a lot🌹

Don't let it be a confrontation, when you go in, tell them "no back adjustment" and if they can't agree to that, walk back out. There are other chiropractors available. It isn't a confrontation; it is a decision. If the doctor turns it into a confrontation, it is time for a new doctor.

I'm assuming you are a paying customer rather than a patient?

You are in charge, you can still be polite and say what YOU want.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SW-User Im a paying customer yes...but last time they said, it will help, when it was sore, and i just cant chance th a t pain again right now. So just say, no its ok, thanks? If they say another treatment will help?
SW-User
@Coralmist I'm no back expert (even though I'm often sore with it)
You are saying you don't want it yet because of the pain...you know best imo
If they say this time will be painless or less pain then go for it if comfortable.

Just going to pm you (don't worry, nothing untoward)

we have had claims where adjustments make it worse. be careful.

Print these words you've just put down and put it in an envelope ..

Hand it to the receptionist when you sign in and ask her to make sure hand it to your chiropractor before you see him/her
SledgeHammer · 46-50, M
@Coralmist emailing is a gamble then and you won't know if they actually read it.. but if you add to the written request::

....and along with this request,, I ask with respect for your understanding ,and not make this anymore uncomfortable than it already has become by not speaking of anything other than my jaw, which by the way, you have been doing a fabulous job on.

Thank you for understanding...

???
MAKE SURE THE RESEPTIONIST HANDS IT TO THE DR BEFORE YOU GO IN
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SledgeHammer Thanks sledgehammer...I just want them to accept my decision without pushing why I should still get back or neck treatments. But hopefully it will go smoothly. Ty again for your ideas🌺
SledgeHammer · 46-50, M
@Coralmist coo...
I think the biggest thing the chiropractor did to make my back better was to give exercises to strengthen the muscles that needed it. I dont think the adjustments were that effective in the longer term.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@CheekyBadger yeah for me, I believe it was just added in because thats what they do primarily..align neck and backs. They said mine needed it in addition to jaw, but i really didnt have back issues. Mainly my jaw needs realignment. So i think after a year of realigning my back too, it should be good. But I can see how yes, exercises would help your back to make it better. More than just alignment
@Coralmist From what I understand chiropractic is all about the neck and back - the core principle is the belief that disorders elsewhere can stem from spinal column so no matter what you go there for you will end up being told that your spine needs adjustment. In some cases they are right, all your nerves descend through the spinal column so it is at the centre of a lot of stuff - I'm not dissing chiropractic altogether but I would exercise caution.
