Have any of you found out you were allergic to something after years of not knowing?

About three years ago, I was talking with some friends at work, about how much I like mushrooms but they're too spicy. They looked at me like I was crazy! Turns out, I'm allergic to them. On a side note, my doctor told me that in a lot of cases, heartburn can be an allergic reaction to certain foods. For example, peanuts give me heartburn.

Lol spicy mushrooms 😌

I discovered im allergic to nuts and sea food about 5yrs ago….grew up loving them both. My then boyfriend bought me nutty chocolate on Valentines and almost killed me lol crazy, funny and random…. I always think i ate too much sea food in Islands and it turned on me lol,,,, it sucks developing an allergy when you are older.

@Pinkdove74 Yeah, I think it isn't that common to develop them years later but like you mentioned, it can be deadly when it suddenly happens.
Pinkdove74 · 31-35, F
@WizardofOz i heard so too and that its pretty dangerous when you discover such when you are older. Crazy how life turns

Lemons..the peel and juice if it touches my skin. I can ingest them but if it gets near my skin I blister and have to have injections at the hospital.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@WizardofOz yes the last time it happened I was at a party and went to do some washing up that I didn’t know was lemon and my hands and wrists blistered. I had a coarse of injections and my dressings changed twice a day. People looked at me as though I’d tried to commit suicide..
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@Primnproper Is that type of reaction rare? I've never heard of anything like that.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@WizardofOz apparently even it being lemons is rare..just typical of me.. lol

You can develop allergies any time in life. Sometimes people have been ok with eating something for years then they develop an intolerance.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@Fluffybull I know my mom used to drink a lot of milk and loved vanilla shakes, now she has a very little tolerance for lactose. She really misses her skakes lol

@WizardofOz Has she tried oat or soya milk?

I don't know what I am allergic to but something makes me sneezing like crazy. So far it only happened twice. I don't remember having any allergies as a kid though.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@CrazyMusicLover As far as I know one of those drops is pure histamine: it *should* react on everyone, if it doesn't it means the entire test is invalid because the area isn't sensitive. So if it's only one it should be fine/normal
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Elessar I just checked out my papers and found out I have no report from that exam. 😑 Uh, I wanted to check out what was that separate regular needle thing. Don't you know what it could have been by any chance?
Anyway, what I gathered from that test is that even if the reaction will fade away within those 15-20 minutes, it still might come suddenly and strongly for a while.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@CrazyMusicLover Probably the histamine thing! If I recall correctly they kept it separate from the proper allergens also here; my last test like that was years ago.. The recent 70+ substances panel was a blood test (essentially they search IgE antibodies against allergens, without measuring the reaction because my reaction test gave unreliable results iirc)

I discovered this with Pecans
LilPrincess · 46-50, F
@WizardofOz I can't eat them, use wax warms that are pecan scented, and can't have them touch other foods. Found this all out the hard way
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@LilPrincess I sometimes worry about eating something different and suddenly going into some type of shock because I'm allergic to it!
LilPrincess · 46-50, F
@WizardofOz its a scary thought
itsok · 31-35, F
I thought celery made everyone’s tongue numb 😂

No. Lynn was told she was allergic to penicillin when she was a child, but she was tested last year and there is no allergy. We are happy that it opens a new line of meds if she needs them.
I have grown into allergies... I used to drink a lot of cherryade as a child - now I am allergic to cherries.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I found out the opposite. While I was allergic to most everything in 1975, in 2023 I was allergic to almost nothing.
Yeah

Allergies can develop over time
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
I developed an allergy to seafood when I was 18 and to an antibiotic 6 years ago. You can develop allergies to things you previously were not allergic too.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
I legitimately was not aware of that. You're fortunate it wasn't a much worse allergic reaction.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire That's one of the reasons why I'm afraid to try new foods. With my luck I'll have a major reaction.
