I need cellphone advice... Please Help If You Can

I've never owned a cellphone and we are being forced to by the end of 2025. Our home telephone service is being discontinued by AT&T. They said they are no longer supporting our area, unless we have have employees of 50 or more. (Some crap like that)

Anyways, cellphones don't work out here in the sticks for one thing. They took out the payphone at bar a few years ago that's a few miles or so down road.

We mostly rely on CB radios here for wireless communication.

But we are getting pressured from our kids to get cellphones. But we don't like the idea of them, or the idea of tracking by Google. (Mainly Me)

What do you people think of Ubuntu Touch cellphones? That way no one can install no Google bullshit and technicality its not an android or Apple phone. Its in a class all by itself according to what I've reading

Your opinion please

You can turn location off if it bothers you that much... from your angle, though, it could be safer to have location on so that your family could find you in the event that you have a seizure when you are away from the farm???

Even if you just share your location with Mrs. Earth when you're away from home and turn it off the rest of the time.

Another option could be to do similar to what you do with your landline and establish a "phone dock" somewhere at home where you keep the phone which you then use as a cordless landline phone. It doesn't move out of the house... so there's no location to track. It's pretty boring to watch actually, it just sits there on the table until you need it or it rings.

Never used Ubuntu phones. I’ve used both Android and Apple devices.
What these companies track and how you can restrict is a conversation of its own.
But I can suggest old school cellphones aka dumb phones with keypads instead of touchscreen. Think Motorola’s Razr

If all the phone is for is speech and text messages you don't need to buy a smartphone just get a simple Nokia 105 or similar. I don't know if such things are available in the US but in Europe they are dirt cheap, the battery lasts for two weeks instead of two days between charges. They don't run apps or connect to internet so Google can't track you.

I have one in addition to my smartphone as a backup.

Here's the listing on a UK shopping site. The price is 13.50 GBP, that's less than 20 USD:

I'm sure something similar would be available in the US

Ubuntu Touch relies on certain components from the Android operating system for hardware support.

Even with Ubuntu Touch, you still need cell coverage, and you state that you don't have coverage.

If you do have some coverage, why don't you get a Feature Phone so you can call people and they can call you.

Because I can't stand Google and privacy stealing ways

What I've been using. No fuss, just talk.

Im not familiar with that brand, but trackers are used by every app out there. Google is 1 of thousands. You have to use a search engine of some type so i would recommend Duck. The vabeat of using Duck is that it can block so much that it doesnt allow some things to load that are needed.

Apple is just as bad with privacy as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and so on.

Look at the Apple Imac back 1998. That thing was loaded with spyware from the factory.

@HumanEarth I dont know if the phones would work in US, but it works in Europe . Fairphone.com
deGooggled model without US software.
HumanEarth · F
@Khenpal1 I've heard of them. I've been doing some major homework on non-google cellphones
You may need to consider satellite phone instead of basic cellular. Starlink is headed toward offering that, but I don't know details or their hardware and there are other providers.

Welcome to 21st century! 🤭 You’ll figure it out in no time. If I can, most anyone can!
Woaahh you never hada cell phone :o yaa go with ubuntu its like running tailz on a computer instead of windows or macOs its not connected to a big company and cant track you
Khenpal1 · M
If you can get internet connection on smartphone it would be perfect . Actually data on smartphone in remote areas works better than having a phone number.
romell · 51-55, M
Your worry is about tracking it can be switched off in settings
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
Never heard of it. Get an iPhone, keep it in a drawer. Satisfy the kids. Don't put your info on it.
WoWgirll · 36-40, F
It is a device of itself never heard of it sorry
