I Hate When People Apologize Without Any Reason

One of my pet peeves is hearing people apologize when they haven't done anything wrong such as walking towards you, but not stepping aside. You don't need to apologize for that.

I once ran over a kids fingers with my supermarket trolley , I turned to his mother the words in my mouth to apologize and then I though wtf was she doing letting him roll around the floor anyway. I shut my mouth and walked off.
I retold this story at work the following day and the woman I worked with congratulated me :)

@MrW888 If someone said, "You're welcome," to me when I should have apologize to him or her, it would confuse me. I don't understand why someone would say that after someone else apologizes. Usually when someone apologizes, the other person says that it's okay, it's not a problem, it's not a big deal, "no worries," or he or she forgives him or her.

I don't apologize anymore if I bump into someone by accident because there was one time when I did and I received a very negative reaction from someone. I kept apologizing while the person was furious at me, walking away and he kept looking at me as if he wanted to hurt me.

@lamppost It happened years ago. I laugh about it now. I'm actually glad it happened because it taught me to be more assertive instead of passive if someone is angry at me. I can let people fume all they want until they feel tired, then I can speak up for myself without attacking them.

It's what you'd say if they'd apologised to you they'd say 'sorry', you'd say, 'you're welcome' but clearly they haven't apologized so it's like you are saying you should have. Might confuse them for a while if they haven't worked it out before.

@MrW888 Someone has said, "You're excused," after I said, "Excuse me," to warn someone to move out of my way politely. "You're excused" can be used as a comeback to someone who bumps into you without apologizing.

It's probably a 'very English' way of saying it, I don't think I'd talk like that in real life if somebody apologized it'd be 'cool' 'don't worry' etc but since they don't it's the most upper crust thing you can think of.

@MrW888 Okay, I understand now. I just never heard anyone say, "You're welcome," after someone apologizes. I'd never say, "You're welcome," either if someone apologizes to me, but these other options would work.

@MrW888 Funny story. My gut instinct would tell me to apologize, but you are right about not apologizing because the kid's mother allowed her son to roll around the floor. :)

If I apologize and it causes a bad reaction I have this up my sleeve (loud enough to overtalk them) 'You're welcome.'
(I always try to think of comebacks before required)

@XNexoX maybe but you know how kids howl for attention especially if there are sweets nearby. None of that was occurring here.

I need help with thinking of comebacks on the spot. What does saying, "You're welcome," do to a person?
XNexoX · 31-35, M
Maybe the kid wasn't rolling on the floor and just fell down for a moment.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
yeah any of those, you're acting as if you'd heard them say it even if they didn't
joahola98wj · 31-35, F
@XNexoX If that is the case, I would apologize to his mother.
