From your experience, are those who drink alcohol alone selfish?

Not necessarily. Drinking for me is definitely a social activity. I have no desire to drink alone. "Selfish" isn't the right way to describe it, though. Some people just prefer to drink alone.

I do think drinking alone could potentially be a sign of possible alcoholism, but not necessarily, and that would depend on how much you drink and how often you do it.

When I was a young man I used to drink to get smashed and at least thought I was having a good time whether I was or not. So I exclusively drank with other people.

Now that I'm an old man I have over the years learned to appreciate the smell and taste of a good Scotch whisky, Kentucky bourbon or Tennessee whiskey. So i fairly often have a dram or two alone. I haven't been drunk in probably 20 years.
That doesn't jive w my experiences as a reliable correlating factor.

For example I like a beer with some meals or a bourbon by the fire. I'd like good company most times .. buuut .. given an active divorce process, it happens alone and may more than not for years to come.

I don't know what selfishness has to do with it. I have a beer alone, I don't see it as a big deal. I think the idea that you can only drink with people is a bit puritan.

I don’t see it as selfish. I see it as a preference for reasons only they know.

@Oldanglaisadverbs I’ve never really touched the stuff. But my dad did. He would drink alone in the midst of his depression and call me belligerent. The drinking alone was a “safe” way for him to deal with his demons without hurting anyone else, even though it hurt me to hear him on those phone calls. I never told him that though. I didn’t have the heart.
