My friend lives over 5 hours away, so when he needs a place to stay, I let him stay at mine. He has been staying here the last few days because his dad was ill. He passed away this morning... I realised a few hours later that it is my friends birthday so I said "Happy Birthday" and he politely replied "Well maybe not happy"... What should have I said instead?
He knows it’s the sentiment that counts. You did nothing wrong. It’s what people say! It’s just hard for him to feel happiness, under such sad circumstances. You’re there for him and that’s what counts.
You were just reaching out to him to offer some comforting thoughts in a time of grief. Death of his father was a big deal regardless of the relationship.
I’ll bet he understood. You were acknowledging his birthday, as his friend. And were there for him during the loss of his parent, often the hardest experience in life.
Maybe something aling the lines of... i know youvarecsad but the day youbwrre born was probablybone ofvthe happiest days in your dad's life And then a hug
