Need help with socially appropriate behavior:

Just received a message from a colleague that their wife (who's also my colleague) had an emergency surgery yesterday and now she's still in pain although now she's home. My colleague said "just wanted to let you know". Now I don't know how to respond to sudden events like this. Should I say something like "thanks for informing me...." Etc? I mean that's weird. I want to say something sensible that can convey my empathy towards the situation. Please help. I should also text the wife. But again I don't know what to say.

"I'm sorry to hear this, it's good that she's home now. I hope she makes a full recovery."

And

"Just heard that you got out of surgery but are still in pain. Hopefully it goes away soon. Let me know if you need anything"

@deadgerbil how tf does your brain work so fast.

@deadgerbil Those are good words. :)
Nicely written and kind.
But tbh, I'd hold off the 'Let me know if you need anything' part unless one really means it and is willing to anything.

@assemblingaknob Maybe send a fruit basket?

"I'm so sorry to hear about your wife. I hope she feels better soon. Please let me know if there is anything I can do."

I think thanks for informing me is a good way to start the paragraph. Maybe express that your sorry for her pain and offer what help you can afford to give?

Say you're sorry to hear that, you're there for them and hope they get well soon.

Wish them well.
Just send her a get well card with some words of encouragement.
