I think being well-educated can set expectations about society and your life prospects that may be unrealistic. I’ve never believed “ignorance is bliss”, but being educated raises your standards (for many things) and you may soon find those standards are not easily met.

I can only speak for myself. I'm a college graduate with 2 bachelor's degrees, but my girlfriend and her parents are all high school dropouts. They're good people and we get along cordially enough, but when they start talking about current events or social issues, it's very clear that there are huge gaps in their understanding of the topics. We're basically approaching the same conversation at two totally different levels of complexity.

I suspect it probably sounds arrogant of me, but I always walk away from those discussions feeling hopeless for the human race. I think that's a big reason why you see really smart people keep to themselves or keep their social circles small. At some point, you just can't gain anything useful or worthwhile from talking to less educated people. It can feel isolating not being able to have engaging dialogues with those around you.

I was told at school that being an intellectual was a guaranteed way to be first against the wall when the communists invaded. Look at Cambodia and China as examples, and we see that was/is true. Thank goodness that in so many modern 'western democracies' education and critical thinking are valued by those in charge and the world is able to see the dangers of populist nationalism. 😕

@FreddieUK Umm, Sir? I think you misspelled the word 'this'.
@FreddieUK

Of course you're main point is and always will be true... I'm not sure why you wrote the last sentence.

@rinkydinkydoink On reflection, neither do I.🤔
A sense of impending sadness? If one were to have studied biology or environmental sciences, I can't imagine how they feel. You could feel without a companion if you have not fostered loving social connections, and this list could go on.
@Shybutwilling2bfriends

I just read a comment you made on another post about working hard to earn what you have.

"For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow."
@ThePatientAnarchist

at this very moment I'm watching King Donald 1 on his balcony about to address his people...
@rinkydinkydoink I don't think he experiences any of this kind of grief or sorrow!
@ThePatientAnarchist

Well, at least no specific weight of sorrow was mentioned. Maybe for each pound of wisdom, sorrow increases an ounce. Much like for every quart of water an additional drop of poison is enough to do the job.

@rinkydinkydoink oh wow!! Education and knowledge are very important to live a good life whether you learn inside the school or out.

@rinkydinkydoink No idea who that might be or what slip-up he committed. But if someone expects educated people to never make mistakes then the downside is in that someone's lack of education.
@ninalanyon

He's a former mayor of NYC. He is no longer relevant (so bad choice on my part).

I expect my surgeon to be perfect!
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@rinkydinkydoink I expect my surgeon to be good, to be attentive to my welfare, to be as good as is necessary. Expecting surgeons or anyone else to be perfect simply reduces the number of people who will take up the profession which means that only the wealthy will be able to afford their services.
@SunshineGirl

Looks like you're in the majority (so far, that is - the dullards must all still be asleep!)
