How can people be interested in aliens from space when they can't even bother to understand other cultures from their own planet?

Maybe they are hoping higher intelligence will rub off on them. "Teach me oh great one the errors of my ways." Because obviously what we have here on this earth isn't doing the job.

It's not the enthusiasm about understanding them, it's about the fear that they might be able to understand and control us(me) more than anyone else on this earth.

Because "people" come in infinite varieties and have varying interests.
