Find out what you are trying to numb in yourself. And...stop trying to numb it. Experience it. Go through it. Do your best to keep yourself safe while you do. Keep in mind...easier said than done. Be patient and kind with yourself if you are able.

I quit smoking cold turkey in a house full of smokers.
I sick of carrying cigarettes, cigars, lighters and matches always around.
One day i got up and pick a day on the calendar and said that's the day I'm quiting.
I stuck to it and I'm still smoke free all these decades later

Understand that getting over an addiction isn't a straight line. There will be setbacks but over time your ability to overcome will get stronger the more you make better choices. It's easier to do if you change your environment. Sometimes people and places make it too difficult to avoid temptation. You need supportive people in your life. When you are having desires, understand the psychology of what is going on. Know that we can change what our brain thinks and what we do in response. As we change our automatic response the brain creates new pathways, learning new responses.

You have to want it.

@Spoiledbrat Yeah that makes sense!

Persist. You will fail repeatedly before you succeed

To pray in faith, and remain in steadfast faith -- the human will can be so weak, but God is strong always, and all things asked in faith without doubt will be given
th3r0n · 41-45, M
Just think honestly about the cost and consequences and choose deep down that it's not worth it and follow that choice
SilverLeaves · 26-30, F
You just have to do it, and believe that you can do it, without overthinking it.

When your mind is made up to quit whatever addiction it is, it's a breeze. If your mind is not made up, you will find a reason to use again

…its easiest to quit at a point when you are so tired of it ( its sucking the life out of you) …that you don’t want it anymore yourself. Where suffering from it outweighs the pleasure
lonelyloner · 31-35, F
if you really want you can give up any kind of addiction , just you have to determine your mind

Having support, accountability and forgiveness.
You need someone to keep you honest on your progress, but understand there will be slip ups along the way. And that you deserve encouragement and help for doing the right thing.

Simply get addicted to another thing. SHIFT.
Keep shifting as an addiction where you don't remain in one place for more than a month.
Keep changing your lover every few months as finding newer lover rejuvenates your soul.

I’ve been able to beat a Dr Pepper addiction by slowly reducing my intake each day. I used to have at least 2 to 3 a day but now I have one once a week sometimes. I can even go weeks without it.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Some addictions are just good habits, but I'm presuming you mean the negative kind... The best was is just not to start.. Do your research before you make the decision to start
JonLosAngeles66 · M
Stop doing what you're addicted to. But seriously, you need to substitute something meaningful like being involved in AA or NA. And possibly go to therapy to see if there is an overarching problem.
Iwillwait · M
Pray to God to take the Addiction away, make the necessary changes to allow yourself the freedom to be absent of all bad influences & enablers.
BearDownChicago · 41-45, M
Still trying to get over it. Take one day at a time. Youll relapse but take those lessons and extend a day at a time

As @Spoiledbrat said "You have to want it." But also you need a reason to quit. In my own case I got my drink problem under control because I fell in love. She gave me an ultimatum: "Give up the booze, or give up her!"
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
You need to change everything to avoid settling back into the patterns that got you hooked in the first place. Maybe hang out in different places and do different things.😷

Substitute it for something more healthy. It's about mind over matter. Control your mind and the rest will be a piece of cake

Don’t listen to the little devil on your shoulder. If you listen, he’ll always win.
As soon as you have a thought, immediately stop and say to yourself, “That’s not me anymore.” Then get up and move. Distract your mind.
Go workout. Go get some sun. Do something positive. In about a month, you’ll be like new.

I'm not sure there's one single best fit for something like that.

Don’t look to me for advice....I’m not very good at quitting.

To try.....and try agian .
To forgive any lapses.
To realsie you need help .
To try to choose to do it in a time in your life when you have no other stressors.
To be kind to yourself and not make drastic changes unless you can afford them.
Sometimes life is hard enough - and we can only do so much🤗
