Ever seen a total solar eclipse?

How was it?

We will be having one in 10 days and I’m excited yet intimidated tbh. Lol

It’ll be before sunset so I guess it won’t be so weird/cool. Or maaaaybe I’m
wrong here. Idk

We watched the Total solar eclipse of April 2024. It lasted 5 minutes over us.
At about 3 pm, the daylight dimmed to something resembling late evening. Streetlights came on automatically.

Then, the sunlight gradually returned, like somebody slowly turning up a dimmer switch.

A surreal experience. Awe inspiring.

DARKEST @ 4:19 MARK

Depending on how close to sunset, you may get a decent effect.

Yes. It was interesting.

In 2017 I saw an eclipse. I'll never forget it, an amazing thing to see!

Yes I have, in 2017 and 2024. Don't miss it, you will never forget it. You have eclipse glasses?
Boeing · 36-40
@Rambler I remember my dad, he used a glass that he made black with the fumes of a candle, and we were able to watch it as children - no glasses required :) @Nunki @Magicianzini

okay, better get those glasses, I did a quick google search... Well my Vision is still beautiful though, but better trust Google meh 😒

The tradition dates all the way back to 1706, when King Louis XIV of France covered his telescope with smoked glass. Because the damage doesn't cause immediate pain and often shows up as blurry vision later in life, it took until the mid-to-late 20th century for doctors to fully document the harm and officially ban the practice.

@Boeing that was dangerous, what your dad did. Yes, you want the approved glasses to see it in progress. Otherwise it's only safe during totality.
Only when someone sat on my face 👀 I definitely saw a moon first 🍑

yes, I took this pic of the one in 2017, it was surreal, I've always read about how dark it got and thus scared ancient people, but it's hard to really imagine until you actually experience it, in the actual path of totality (if you're outside of this, then you still cannot imagine the effect, of it being as dark as night at, say, 3 in the afternnon, with street lamps coming on)

this pic outside, looking down a street, was taken at 1449 / 2:49 PM ... it is never this dark at that time, here at my latitude

Omg wow. That’s pretty scary if you ask me 😶 @SnickersDOM
Total Eclipse of the Heart?
Nunki · 31-35, F
I wish @legalboxers
Yeah, in the late 90s we had one. Make sure to get yourself some proper glasses for viewing it.
Kiesel · 56-60, M
Yes I have. Two times that I can recall.
Make sure you get the correct lenses to watch it…
It’s powerful, majestic, moving
CactusJackManson · 51-55, M
Yes, in 1984, staring out the window from my desk in my 4th grade classroom in Virginia.
CactusJackManson · 51-55, M
@samueltyler2 No. They made us sit in our desks so we wouldn't get up and look at the sun. The cool thing was that it got completely dark for a few minutes in the middle of the day.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@CactusJackManson did they set up a pin hole camera for everyone to see the eclipse?
CactusJackManson · 51-55, M
@samueltyler2 No. They just made us sit there quietly. We were all marveling that it got totally dark during the daytime.
Elessar · 31-35, M
I think I've seen one in Egypt once but I'm not sure

It had become darker iirc

I was at most 10

A banger for you.

Amazing, although i only saw a partial eclipse twice. It was difficult to get the correct view. I gave photos somewhere.
Oneofthestormboys · 56-60, M
Not quite total, but pretty close. It was weird because all the birds started roosting and tweeting like it was dusk. A very strange experience!

@Nunki Placebo's "Battle for the Sun" album cover. I adore it.
