I Spank My Children

[image/video - please log in to see this content]

“I told Hannah, an Amish mother of seven, that many non-Amish people are astonished that Amish offspring are so quiet, well mannered and well behaved. 'Why might that be' I asked. Without hesitation or a trace of humor, she responded, 'Oh, it's the spanking that makes them so nice.'......" http://bit.ly/2wmgO9Z and the paddle has not disappeared from Amish schools, Amish teachers are expected to discipline children: http://bit.ly/2uigueY

Truth, truth! Our school's paddle wasn't a paddle as much as a flat stick somewhat like those stir sticks hardware stores use to dip in paint and stir it up. My mam used a wooden spoon, sometimes belt.

It sounds harsh to people not used to the concept or rushing to call it abuse, but we were never ( at least none in my family ) disciplined without reason nor with anger. It was seldom and we were told the reason why.
@Mrpauldavies no.Just propriety and modesty isis.

There may be some families that are the exception (if the parent is prone to abuse, perhaps some child psychological conditions) but I believe the great suppressed truth is that all children benefit from spanking. And there is way too little spanking these days and the results of the no-spanking experiment are all around us. Amish communities, and their children, are a stark contrast.

I talked to am Amish girl a few years ago who was 18 or 19. She was out on that period they are allowed to experience the real world for a time before going back. She said spankings for older girls were in the barn bent over a rail skirt up with a razor strap across their panties by their fathers. They were not bare it was considered not decent. She did not mention school spankings.
@Phoebe1990 That would be quite scandalous in our district. To pull up the skirt and on top of that done by the father.
Phoebe1990 · 31-35, F
@EllaDisenchanted Oh OK - interesting. Well I didn't mention she said that was for severe discipline, for something the girl did that was very big.
@Phoebe1990 Every family is different and each district has some differences on acceptable and not acceptable with some things.

Just it's rare to find girls disciplined by fathers simply because of modesty issues and a man hitting a woman is a huge taboo.

I heard somewhere that 16 is considered the "age of adulthood" with the Amish. They can't really experience the outside world as 16-year-olds, but they can stop being ruled by their parents.

So, is corporal punishment practiced up to and including age 15, but then no more after turning 16?

Is there any adult spanking, such as husbands spanking wives?

How about differences between the most old-fashioned type of Amish, and the more modern Mennonites?

@EllaDisenchanted

Is it possible to get an Amish woman to take in a non-Amish little girl as a "baby-sitter," to train her to wear clothes like an Amish girl, and to demand respect from her with spanking and other discipline?

There are probably a lot of non-Amish who would like to see their children get some obedience training from Amish ladies.

Probably too risky to worry about legal issues or drawing too much attention, but it seems like it should be possible.
@JadaNiceSkin Maybe but the clothing and discipline go beyond just the aactions. It's based in faith and a deeper sense of community and lifestyle. Really, such home training is for the parents to do. So the thought of farming out a child for physical discipline is very foreign and I don't know anyone that would do it.

I've noticed a continuing outright lie going on regarding the use of a claim that a professional medical organization supports spanking. The person making this claim is saying the organization has a large membership when in reality it has a very small membership. There is a large difference in the size of membership between the two different professional pediatric medical organizations. The membership in the American College of Pediatrics is NOT 60,000 as claimed, but some where between 200 and 600, and it's only been in existence since 2002 where as the American Academy of Pediatrics membership is over 60,000 doctors and began in the late 1930's. The AAP opposes all corporal punishment of children. The ACP is an alt-right fringe group of doctors that support child spanking. Why does a person that supports spanking think its acceptable to boldly lie about the membership number of the ACP to make it appear to look like pro-spanking is some majority position without worrying about the spiritual consequences of this deception? The truth is there is NO professional organization in large numbers that supports the spanking of children in the U.S.

The Amish are fairly strict too and tend to err on the side of strict discipline. No symbolic spankings there and I have heard it tends to be something that leaves an impression. For the older kids that would mean more than even a hairbrush
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@beckychandler Indeed yes and the hairbrush works for that purpose well. It delivers a very strong sting but won't leave marks past that. Though I've also heard lexan paddles are the ultimate in delivering a sting.
Strictmother · 46-50, F
@Kathryn05 MY lexan paddle is a bum roaster. Hardly any lasting effects, but a stinging butt. I learned about it from a lady that spanked her 14 year old son three consecutive days until he showed her where he hid something. Hard headed child. I bought one for use it just sometimes. My son hates it and cringes when I tell him to "Get Mummies clear paddle"
stick57 · 70-79, M
@Kathryn05 their bottoms need roasting

When I taught (in a school where corporal punishment was extensively used) we also used to get many compliments on our pupils' behaviour and on their sunny disposition.
margret1980 · 41-45, F
Maybe it doesn't need spanking, to make a child well mannered and well behaved. But a child definitely needs rules and discipline to be trained to be well mannered and well behaved. Providing no rules and discipline is not different to child neglection.
StrictSouthernHOH · 46-50, M
A well spanked child is a well behaved one.
Spot on truth!
On a more general point it seems that the Amish might be a model for orthodox (small "o" orthodox) Christians in a post (anti) Christian society.
Jesuscentreoflife · 56-60, M
Children need to be reproved. Without it they will remain self centered and entitle little brats their whole lives.

We spanked our children as well.

An exterior that is too quiet often hides a deeply troubled interior. Those kids are gonna grow up to be fucked up adults, and in worst cases, will pass it on to their kids as well. And the whole circle becomes poisonous.

@EllaDisenchanted This isn't a matter of distaste or an attack towards an entire group, there's plenty of research done on this that proves it can have pretty bad effects.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/good-thinking/201604/what-really-happens-when-parents-hits-their-kids
@SW-User There is also plenty of research done that proves lack of discipline in the home leads to increased crime and suicide rates.

What it comes down to is the individual and the culture and society that springs up around that person.

So if you want a comparison then I suggest you look at western society in general and what's going on there versus the Amish community or the mennonite community in general.

Compare and contrast then tell me which is better overall as far as civility and adjustment.
@SW-User In the mainstream media the impression is given that “the science is in” – spanking is the worst possible thing a parent could do. But the science is not in. The American College of Pediatricians, an organization of some 60,000 pediatricians and pediatric researchers, just last January issued a warning "Research on Disciplinary Spanking is Misleading" https://similarworlds.com/2327115-I-Am-A-Strict-Mom/596949-Recently-there-has-been-a-tsunami-of-reports-in But, for what can only be ideological reasons, the American College of Pediatricians is totally ignored.

There is actually some very good research which reached the conclusion that spanking is the very best way to get children to comply with their parents' wishes (research which has been peer reviewed as the ACP points out).

And then there is the experience of parents -- for eons it has been noticed that spanking is a helpful parenting tool. The Amish are not the exception. It seems strange that the wisdom of the ages is being overturned by fifty years of research – research that has often been not just shoddy, but ideologically motivated.
