I Spank My Children

[image/video - please log in to see this content]

“I told Hannah, an Amish mother of seven, that many non-Amish people are astonished that Amish offspring are so quiet, well mannered and well behaved. 'Why might that be' I asked. Without hesitation or a trace of humor, she responded, 'Oh, it's the spanking that makes them so nice.'......" http://bit.ly/2wmgO9Z and the paddle has not disappeared from Amish schools, Amish teachers are expected to discipline children: http://bit.ly/2uigueY

The Amish are fairly strict too and tend to err on the side of strict discipline. No symbolic spankings there and I have heard it tends to be something that leaves an impression. For the older kids that would mean more than even a hairbrush

@Kathryn05 what more than the hairbrush do they use?
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@Oldmanjimbo I'm not an expert but I've heard of them using a strap or paddle
@Oldmanjimbo EllaDisenchated is former Amish, she has comments on her experience in this regard above. I don't think there is any general rule on specifics like implements used for spanking -- there are variations from family to family; and school to school. But virtually all Amish families spank. Michael & Debi Pearl did a lot of research on Amish child discipline and incorporated it in their book "To Train Up A Child"
@beckychandler Yes,I read their first book and some things are right from my childhood lol
@EllaDisenchanted The original 1994 cover of the book even has a representation of what is suppose to be an Amish family:

It is now in its umpteenth printing (it is a multi-decade bestseller despite the claim that spanking and traditional parenting is disappearing -- it seems there remains a sizable remnant -- Thank God ) and has a slicked up cover. Over the years the Pearls have gotten the predictable secular backlash and hate -- I hope it has not caused them to significantly change (water down) the content of their book.
@beckychandler I've not seen this cover before. The kids hanging out the back worry me cause they're either 8 feet tall, to be able to go out the back opening, or their necks are separating from their body.

I do love Created To Be A Help Meet. It's very honest, tho at dinner points it feels like miss pearl it's a bit sharp in her specific advice. But it feels like the frustration of a woman dealing with other women with lack of common sense so understandable.
@EllaDisenchanted 😂

I agree with the observation in your second paragraph.

I don't know if it was in a book or somewhere else that they recommended using 3/8 inch PVC pipe as a spanking implement because it gives a decent (sore) spanking and supposedly does not leave "marks" which are the modern day trigger for the authorities to move in. Of course the secular permissive parenting ideologues had a field day with that.

But then a mentally ill parent severely beat a child half to death and copies of their books were found in her home. Explaining that this is not even near the ballpark of anything which the Pearls advocated does no good ...and they took a public relations beating.

But they recovered -- and their books remain bestsellers.☺
@beckychandler that's what people don't understand: discipline calls for a quick sharp soreness that's done and over to get the point across, not about causing unneeded pain or bruising. They'd a line between discipline and abuse, after all.
Kathryn05 · 41-45, F
@beckychandler Indeed yes and the hairbrush works for that purpose well. It delivers a very strong sting but won't leave marks past that. Though I've also heard lexan paddles are the ultimate in delivering a sting.

@Kathryn05 MY lexan paddle is a bum roaster. Hardly any lasting effects, but a stinging butt. I learned about it from a lady that spanked her 14 year old son three consecutive days until he showed her where he hid something. Hard headed child. I bought one for use it just sometimes. My son hates it and cringes when I tell him to "Get Mummies clear paddle"

@Kathryn05 their bottoms need roasting
