I Spank My Children

[image/video - please log in to see this content]

“I told Hannah, an Amish mother of seven, that many non-Amish people are astonished that Amish offspring are so quiet, well mannered and well behaved. 'Why might that be' I asked. Without hesitation or a trace of humor, she responded, 'Oh, it's the spanking that makes them so nice.'......" http://bit.ly/2wmgO9Z and the paddle has not disappeared from Amish schools, Amish teachers are expected to discipline children: http://bit.ly/2uigueY

I heard somewhere that 16 is considered the "age of adulthood" with the Amish. They can't really experience the outside world as 16-year-olds, but they can stop being ruled by their parents.

So, is corporal punishment practiced up to and including age 15, but then no more after turning 16?

Is there any adult spanking, such as husbands spanking wives?

How about differences between the most old-fashioned type of Amish, and the more modern Mennonites?
@JadaNiceSkin Amish don't give a specific age for when discipline ends. It's really a matter of the child's maturity and personality.

Adult disabling.... well that's between husbands and wives lol.

@EllaDisenchanted When you say, "No age when discipline ends," I think you mean that it ends at 16 for sure, but it might also end earlier than that.

What do you mean "disabling?" By saying "between husbands and wives," you mean that there is no church teaching or guidance of any sort? And it is never talked about or written down, so we have no way of knowing?

Usually if a husband is spanking his wife, there is probably an age difference that gives a kind of "daddy-daughter" relationship. I can't imagine a 16-year-old boy spanking his 16-year-old wife much. But someone presumably gives them "advice," including parents and church elders.
@JadaNiceSkin No, what I mean is that Amish don't have an age where their child's discipline ends, tho plenty of children don't need discipline ad late as 16. I've never heard of a community holding an age standard for discipline and mine didn't have one.

and as fir marriages, that was autocorrect. What happens between husband and wife is their business. They'd nothing in Amish life that will have anyone, church elders or otherwise, giving that kind of advice.

@Mrpauldavies In the case of Amish we don't discipline opposite sex once they're more physically mature. My dat stopped handling my discipline when I was young and my man wad the one that did it. Mam didn't discipline my brothers once they turned past about 8.

Every family is different but in general Amish tradition in our district was boys get it from dat, girls from mam.

@Mrpauldavies Depending on what's the proper punishment we got wooden spoon, belt or switch.

@Mrpauldavies Switch is VERY effective. Only needed it once in my life to correct me. Plenty of things I managed to get away with tho lol.

@Mrpauldavies No, we had an old dried switch that was kept in a corner for just in case.

@Mrpauldavies Fresh is too pliable and can cut. it's more for injury than discipline so has no place in an Amish home.

@Mrpauldavies Tradition is a big parry of Amish life. Parenting in that traditional way is through instilling the concept of discipline, sometimes the hard way, and eradicating entitlement.

@Mrpauldavies That's the thing with people wanting to be friends instead of parents. A child trained up properly will always find and be a friend to their family.

Is it possible to get an Amish woman to take in a non-Amish little girl as a "baby-sitter," to train her to wear clothes like an Amish girl, and to demand respect from her with spanking and other discipline?

There are probably a lot of non-Amish who would like to see their children get some obedience training from Amish ladies.

Probably too risky to worry about legal issues or drawing too much attention, but it seems like it should be possible.
@JadaNiceSkin Maybe but the clothing and discipline go beyond just the aactions. It's based in faith and a deeper sense of community and lifestyle. Really, such home training is for the parents to do. So the thought of farming out a child for physical discipline is very foreign and I don't know anyone that would do it.
