Why do Americans add a meaningless "ass" onto words?

Like "badass", for example? What does it have to do with their bottoms?
That's Ridiculass!
carpediem · 61-69, M
Dumbass is used quite frequently.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@BijouPleasurette LOL. Now you understand
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@carpediem I don't understand what all this has to do with asses. Lol :)
carpediem · 61-69, M
@BijouPleasurette Exactly the same thing as it has to do with insects.
luv2fly352 · 70-79, M
Every country uses slang in some form.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@luv2fly352 True, but what's with this American fixation on bottoms?
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
Origin is African -American slang. Later adopted into general slang.

It's a weird-ass practice.
Straylight · 31-35, F
I don’tass know.
WhateverWorks · 36-40
🤔😆 it’s a good question. I’m pretty sure the ass is referring to donkeys, not butts, but I’m still not sure why we do it.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@WhateverWorks You mean "badass" means "bad donkey"? I don't think so. Lol :)
An ass is known to be a dumb animal. Even in the Arab world we use it as an insult but we don't have a word for ass the animal so we use the word for donkey. We have a separate word for ass the bottom.
Budwick · 70-79, M
In America 'ass' has meaning.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@Budwick Yes, it's a vulgar slang word for the buttocks, it's the American equivalent of the English "arse".
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@BijouPleasurette It's the same word, the pronunciation has changed that's all.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon And the spelling. We spell it "arse" while Americans spell it "ass".
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
I don’t know but I love the word dumbass.
TheRascallyOne · 31-35, M
im a super badass
NickiHijab · F
I do that.
NudasPriest · 46-50, M
It's pure cl...
Human1000 · M
It's about the stubbornness or unruliness of a donkey; it is not about a human "backside".
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@Human1000 It is. Basil Fawlty, the eccentric proprietor of Fawlty Towers, took it that way. Don't you remember? When that American guy Mr. Hamilton mentioned something with "ass" in it, Basil said "everything's bottoms with you, isn't it". Lol :)
