Why do Americans add a meaningless "ass" onto words?

Like "badass", for example? What does it have to do with their bottoms?

It's about the stubbornness or unruliness of a donkey; it is not about a human "backside".

@Human1000 It is. Basil Fawlty, the eccentric proprietor of Fawlty Towers, took it that way. Don't you remember? When that American guy Mr. Hamilton mentioned something with "ass" in it, Basil said "everything's bottoms with you, isn't it". Lol :)
