Where did the Votes go?

Trump wins by just under 74 million votes and Kamala loses by just over 69 million votes.

Back in 2020 Trump lost by just over 74 million votes and Biden won by over 81 million votes.

So where did those 21 million + Democrat votes go?
That's a difference of 12 million votes, not 21 million. Trump more or less duplicated his 2020 numbers, so the drop was on Harris' side. A quarter of Black men and half of Latino men voted for Trump, along with a surprising number of Gen Z men.

The dead vote wasn't allowed this time.

@sunsporter1649 good riddance to him also.

Good source, I was looking for this info anyway!

https://www.newsweek.com/voter-turnout-count-claims-map-election-1981645

"In 2020, 66.38 percent of the eligible voting population turned out, with 159,738,337 ballots counted across the country, according to the University of Florida's Election Lab. There were 240,628,443 eligible voters that year.

As of 2 p.m. ET Wednesday, fewer people had turned out than four years ago—64.54 percent of the 245,741,673 eligible had cast ballots for a total of 158,549,000."
Your math is clearly wrong as it isn't 21 million...

When this stupid argument started, there were still a ton of votes being counted, even if they knew whom won the state, they didn't know the exact number of popular votes.

As you can see in the graph below, when this started, even Trump had less votes in 2024 than he did in 2020.

But that's not correct, as they keep counting, Trump got more votes in 2024 than he did in 2020.

2020
81.28m for Biden
74.22m for Trump

2024 (so far, and they might not be fully done counting yet)
74.25m for Trump
70.35 for Harris

So instead of your 21 million, it's actually less than 11 million.

And really, one would need to go into more details of which states (or if it's about equality among all) the that voted less, as a lot of states are basically known which way the state is going. So less people might show up.

It's really only the battle ground states that matter big time.
Washington Post claims to have the state by state breakdown, but it's not free so I couldn't get access to it.

But the guardian had a pictures version.

Looking at the map below

Considering Trump got about the same ending number (so far), I think we can assume the 1 point shifts (at least the red dashes) are less democrats showing up to vote in those areas.

Looks mostly like states where Trump was projected to win no matter what, and also Pennsylvania, Virginia and Northern Illinois.

But PA and GA are the battleground states, most of the others were thought to be fairly locked already.

And they still say the election wasn't stolen 🤔
TheShanachie · 61-69, M
Voter intimidation, response to propaganda that turned some to Trump, laziness, death, employee intimidation, persons that may have voted for Biden but make more than 400,000 may have decided to go to Trump in particular if they don’t care about society. Other reasons also I am sure.
deadgerbil · 26-30
Those votes were sitting at home, or literally doing anything other than voting. There being x amount of turnout last election means nothing
The sad truth is that most Americans don't vote. 2020 was a special case because of covid. That's why people voted at record levels, they desperately wanted a change. But when the pandemic ended, most people went back to tuning out.

If you want to know just how unengaged Americans are, consider this...

Biden dropped out of the race, and a ton of people didn't find out until three months later. So the good news is that the Trump Cult hasn't grown. The bad news is that the Democrats have totally failed at messaging.
A lot of people didn't vote.
daydeeo · 61-69, M
@Spoiledbrat Right. Maybe. 21 million of them. Could happen.
@daydeeo What do you think happened?
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@daydeeo And the BS flys out the window. Sure that's what happened!
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
There are other candidates. In fact despite endorsing Trump, Kennedy was still on the ballot as well as others. Then there's always the write in vote. Which could be anyone even if they are not real people.

Mickey mouse was once a popular write in vote.
@DeWayfarer You said write in vote.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Spoiledbrat Yes. Type in is considered write in.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@Spoiledbrat You can write in a name instead of voting for the printed choice. My wife claims she was going to write in Snoop, I'd have gone with Jason Kelce myself. There are lots of write in ballots, but they don't really have a big effect on the overall count.

I would imagine that a lot of people were discouraged by the toxicity of the debate and not being especially enthused by the calibre of either candidate.
Deaths and people who didn't vote for her.

5 million that’s a lot of people!
