We have increasingly restrict rules in the UK about our food, which I've no problem with. However, most conservative commentators are outraged at the restriction in the ability to buy whatever poison you want to put into your system. I'm amazed that an arch conservative is restricting a US citizen's right to find out about and imbibe diabetes inducing chemicals.

Soda is now excluded from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in six more states: Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, Florida, and West Virginia. Four of those states, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Florida, have banned candy as well.
These states join six others that signed similar waivers earlier this year.
Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said the changes are a start in addressing chronic diseases and other health issues.
“It is incredible to see so many states take action at this critical moment in our nation’s history and do something to begin to address chronic health problems. President Trump has changed the status quo, and the entire cabinet is taking action to Make America Healthy Again. At USDA, we play a key role in supporting Americans who fall on hard times, and that commitment does not change. Rather, these state waivers promote healthier options for families in need,” said Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins.

I live in Oklahoma and they had a news story today about Oklahoma’s SNAP program doing this. Should also ban chips, salty, deep-fried and full of inflammatory oils.

Agreed. But I suspect there has to be a compromise to keep stores in poorer neighbourhoods economically viable. Not much point in having food stamps if there is nowhere to spend them.

@SunshineGirl Good point. Though I think to be effective policies like that also need education, and I don't what public information is freely and readily available in those areas.

More states are changing what SNAP benefits will cover at the grocery store.

I imagine because Trump is POTUS, most Democrats will stand with Big Soda and fight this.
What is wrong with steering people away from diabetes? We will all have to pay for their care.

Good, reduce the obesity problem in a certain community

The American Beverage Association is opposing the efforts to stop food stamps from being used to buy soft drinks.
Surprise Suprise. Will Dems side with Big Soda over this?

And I hope you stay healthy.
But the whole purpose of insurance is to spread the risk. Not to single out people and punish them for doing (or eating) things that are legal.

@beckyromero Thats the thing. It is not punishing them, it is helping them. The "N" in SNAP stands for
Nutrition. There is no nutrition in candy and soda.
Why would you want to hurt their health?

Everyone's genes are different. And what we eat or drink does not effect everyone in the same way. Just as some smokers get cancer and some non smokers do not.
What's next? Punish people because the type of job they work is very physical and likely to develop medical problems such as knee replacements or back surgery? Or punish people who "choose" to live near chemical plants and their children develop respiratory problems? Or tell West Virginia coal miners, "Too bad your lungs are shot. You should have worked retail"?
