Very true. Im growing some crops to cushion food price increases.

@jehova A word of advice. Skip the peasant crops unless you have a lot of land. The little luxuries like a lemon or lime tree are more value to trade than potatoes or Carrots.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman im in upstate ny. Luxury crops dont exist here; other than maybe cannabis.
Cannabis though is a thermogenic crop; it produces heat. Allowing me to survive winter even if i cannot afford\acquire wood or gas.

@jehova Being optimistic ( in a negative way) I dont see civilisation imploding. Any more than it did in the Great Depression. But life in the big cities is going to get harder for those at the bottom. And there will be many more of them..😷

The only justification for tariffs is to counter someone else's tariff 🤦‍♀

Tariffs protect the income and profits of a particular economic sector. But there is a price to pay and it is the ordinary consumer who always gets landed with the bill.

Instead of whingeing about how everything is so unfair, how about investing in the economy and making work a more attractive and visble proposition for unemployed Americans?
BigGuy2 · 31-35, M
@SunshineGirl oh really - Germany has slapped a 50% tariff on imported goods, conversely, American is 2-3% 🤷🏼‍♂🤷🏼‍♂🤷🏼‍♂
Gee professor .. thanks for sharing.

So ... it's ok for nearly every nation in the world to assess higher tariffs on the US than the US applies ... buuuut the worlds gonna end if the U.S. takes action to change it to be more balanced?

Sounds like the greed sits elsewhere and this is aimed at trying to keep the status quo.

Great information for all that are unaware of the past and changes that have been made.
The tarrifs began under Biden, solar panels... Meh - but he's a Democrat, so like, uh huh.
Punishing the population is what you voted for. A moderate had no politics and just uses power for his own friends, a conservative is overly violent to society. You have the conservatives and the center right. Nobody else. You certainly win.

Let's not forget the smoot Hawley act in the 30s and how it prolonged the depression...

What has me perplexed more than anything about Trump's tariffs, is the unequivocal lack of pushback on this issue from Americans themselves, considering it will be the American citizens who will pay the price of Trump's tariffs, not the rest of the world.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@swirlie The lack of comprehension on these matters scares the hell out of me on behalf of Americans. I can seriously see this becoming a version of Gilead if something isnt done to stop it. And if it IS done, God help them all..😷

As usual when it comes to Americans, their lack of knowledge is what screws them every time. When the average American hears Trump's rant about putting tariffs on Canadian imports or on any imports to the USA from Europe, the average American thinks this will be a good thing for the USA because of all the money they THINK their government will be harvesting for the good of America from those tariffs!

Living near the Canada/US border myself, I can tell you first hand that what I've just described is how Americans actually see this whole thing playing out in their favor if Trump starts to impose tariffs on imported goods to the USA. Americans think it will be Canada who pays that 25% tariff on Canadian goods entering the USA, not them!

Unfortunately, Americans have never been taught who it is that actually pays for those tariffs because if they had been taught, you'd start to see some pushback from Americans, which currently there is absolutely NONE of. There is none because Americans in general see Trump's tariffs as a 'good thing' for America.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@swirlie While Americans lack of understanding certainly disables them intellectually (apologies to the intelligent, thinking Americans out there) it really is their certainty that they know better than others that will doom them. Because they just wont learn..😷
