Why are European countries increasing defense spending?

I have been hearing a lot about this lately, why all of a sudden are places like the U.K.
doubling their defense budget?

I don't think we are doubling our defence budget - more's the pity. Starmer has only said he will increase it from 2.3% to 2.5% of GDP - which might mean no increase at all! Still, it seems to have bought Starmer a favourable reception in Washington.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@Thrust I actually do agree with you. Canada should have paid its 2% for sure. But the US would spend that much on their military regardless, its and industry there.

I've always been an advocate of spending more on our military. I'm not a pacifist.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@JimboSaturn Starmer will be putting another 17 Billion into defense, I guess that is a start.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@DogMan Yes he said that he will go above the 2% which is good, Europe and Canada must start spending to defend itself.
Trump is going to give Ukraine to Russia... and, a few of us have strangled the life out of our militaries over the past 20 years ago. So, whatever we are putting in now, is just a case of bringing the military back to what we had in 2005.

If we are right and Putin doesn't stop with just invading Ukraine, Poland is likely next - and we will be at war. If we are wrong... we are ready to go to war, should things escalate further.

We can't rely on America anymore - a fact that Trump has, and continues to, demonstrate.
@newjaninev2 Did you miss the news three years ago, too??? When Russia invaded Ukraine??? Or are you just as bad as your buddy here???

I was referring to that... I have no idea what you're trying to say.

USSR? USSA?

Please be clearer
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
@HootyTheNightOwl That will NEVER happen!!
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
Well because we need to be able to defend ourselves against Russia. We have always depended on US military for that until now, but that's no longer possible. I don't approve of Trump forcing us to do this, but I DO approve of us doing this regardless. Its ridiculous that we should depend on the US for this. I just fear its still too little too late. And the EU is way too divided to even work efficiently together on this.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@DogMan Well he did side with Russia, after a couple of days with Putin, he said that Zenlynskky started the war and that he is a dictator. Vance then insulted NATO saying they are like the soviets, and Trump has encouraged Russia to invade countries who do pay up like NATO is a protection racket.

It's in the US and Europe's interest not to let Putin do as he pleases in the world, it's a good investment in the long run. The reason the war has gone on this long is that Ukraine is not a NATO country and we can't escalate the way we would like.

I do agree with you that the world has relied on the US for far to long. The world is learning that the US is not longer an ally and friend necessarily.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@JimboSaturn I'm not sure I believe this part that you wrote. "Trump has encouraged Russia to invade countries who do pay up like NATO is a protection racket"

The end result, no matter what, will be Ukraine losing some land. Should we do it now? or keep
running down the coffers while Ukraine is reduced to rubble? Will it be better in 5 years if
we keep pouring money into it? China and Russia would love that wouldn't they?
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@DogMan He literally said that and it is recorded. It was one of his stories "hey sir, what if we don't pay, and then I said, hey if you don't pay, I will encourage people to take over your country"

North Korea and China will be emboldened if Putin gets his way not to mention Putin himself. Just make if costly and the America First people will give in!

Now Trump has sucessfully exhorted Ukraine, need help? give me 50% of your minerals. So they are left with 20% less land and half their minerals gone from a war they didn't start.
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
It's about time! The other Nato countries haven't kept to their original committments for years!!!
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Because nato is less effective as it looks like Russia is going to be given large parts of Ukraine. It's clear therefore that if Russia invaded Poland or the Baltic States in a similar manner USA won't put troops in the ground or supply weapons without wanting huge payments. So Europe has to fight Russia on it's own when it happens.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@DogMan Munich 30 September 1938.

History repeating itself. You appease the bully dictator he'll simply cause greater hell elsewhere later. Then it was Poland the next year. I wouldn't be surprised if history completely repeats itself.

@OldBrit It won't, don't worry. But you need to get rid of Starmer before it does, that's for sure.

He will be another Chamberlin.
carpediem · 61-69, M
They've been slackers for decades. They rely on the protection of the US. Trump is calling them out. Time to play like grownups Europe. It's about time.
in hopes donnie will renig on withdrawing, and stay a paying memeber...

theyre not really doubling..
they just paying what they should..

We’re preparing for a world with no US in it. It’s coming soon.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@DogMan
Universities in North America
and Europe now routinely advertise for positions in ‘‘global gover
nance,’’ a term that few would have heard of a decade ago.

I’ve just checked with my wife who is head of faculty at our local Uni and that’s not a thing. And she confirmed it’s neither on any national syllabus or curriculum.

We can discount that.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@WintaTheAngle People around the world talk about it all the time, and study it.

Correct, it hasn't happened yet. But people are working on it. Tell your wife to
leave the faculty lounge and look into it. You can find thousands of articles
on people that are fighting for it. Like George Soros.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@DogMan Well they can do as they wish. The U.K. however just left the EU over concerns it wasn’t being listened to on various issues and to restore full policy making to parliament.

It’s therefore very unlikely that very same electorate would consider a World government.

We aren’t joiners. There’s our interests and then there’s everyone else’s. If others want to surrender regional power that’s their problem. The U.K., our overseas dependencies and so on will not.

over one million dead

Happily, the vast majority of them are russian invaders 👍

an unwinnable war

It certainly is for the russian barbarians.
Russia started this war eleven years ago and even now is temporarily infesting just 18% of Ukraine's territory.

To add to russia's humiliation, last year russia was invaded for the first time since 1942 - and they still haven't been able to force the Ukrainians out! 😂
IM5688 · 61-69, M
Preparing to fight Russia.
After Ukraine, Russia will try for Poland and work his way into Europe.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@IM5688 Yeah, sure he will. 🤣 You sound like you are looking forward to it.

Are you a war monger?
IM5688 · 61-69, M
@DogMan Not at all. Just answering your question simply and to the point.
